Books for Sale: Jacqueline de Lansay (Johanes Gros), Les délices libertines. Roman inédit. Moncontour, au bonheur des dames. n.d. [Maurice Duflou, circa 1937].

Another curiosity that I have posted before however this second edition has Colour illustrations ( at least most of them are)., I was aware of the edition but had never seen it, and knowing that a complete one, if it could be found would likely be beyond my means, I was fortunate to find this copy and although it lacks 5 of the original 14 illustrations, I have had the  1935 First edition which had the full set of illustrations but in mono.  Therefore I have combined the two listings and where the illustrations below appear in mono, the challenge is for anyone who has copies of them in colour can donate them in jpeg format around 2meg. I credit  any contribution in the listing as a donation by donors name if appropriate

This Book

A very nice clandestine erotica from the 1930’s.

Book for Sale: The Perfumed Garden: A Manual of Arabian Erotology. Sheikh Nefzawi. (Richard Burton) (Abu Abdullah Muhammad ben Umar Nafzawi) Published by Librairie Astra, n.d (Circa 1930) With 6 Illustrations By “Herric”(Cheri Herouard)

This Book

Another puzzle, this time it is about a pretty common title. This one and the “Kama Soutra”, were commonly published by Librarie Astra and others and peddled to the English speaking tourist trade in Paris over many years arguably from the late 1920’s to the 1950’s, This Book differs in that it is on much better quality paper than the normal, the print quality is good and the printers motif is not the usual  Astra one, and it even has a silk bookmark. But most strikingly it is embellished with 6 rather beautiful illustrations by Herric.

I cannot find any reference to these illustrations linked to an English text of this title however on the Bibliocuriosa site there is a reference to-

Vatsyayna, Les “Kama Soutra”.

I have no way of knowing if they are the same illustrations as the link is not linked to an item in the “Bibliocuriosa” collection, so they have not seen a copy.

Books for Sale :LA FLAGELLATION A TRAVERS LE MONDE: Jean de Villiot. La Tradition de la Garde. Charles Carrington. PARIS 1907

This Book

Unusual for me, but this time not a clandestine publication, rather an openly published title on the theme of flagellation, such titles were seldom if ever banned and although produced by the premier pornographer  Charles Carrington, the print and publication details of these books did not require concealment. Carrington produced huge numbers of very expensive books, ranging from reprints of classic “Galants” to pseudo scientific sex books and pseudo historical and even the works of Oscar Wilde. Most of Carrington’s openly published titles were lavish productions on expensive paper and in limited editions, such as the title here, which is rather wonderfully illustrated by Leon Roze. It has the added luxury of supplying all of its own decorations for my listing.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.

Bookcase Archive: Gamiani Clandestine Edition, No Date, No Publisher, No place. (Likely Paris) (1920-1930)

This Book

The book is rebound in half leather (spine and corners) on dark marbled boards. Title in gilt embossed horizontally, with embossed decorations, gold bands ( significant wear to raised band)s. Fairly obviously with no information whatsoever within the book itself it is not possible to accurately reference to any Gamiani bibliographical information.

Cover (Bound in Cover)

Gamiani Frontispiece

Gamiani, Clandestine Edition, No Date, No Publisher, No place. ( Paris)(1920-1930)Printed on good quality paper with strong clear text, Original Illustrated covers preserved, 112 pages of text, with main illustrations in black and red, and small vignettes and chapter headings and endings in mono.

The book does have an introduction which appears to focus on the historical and social history of the origin of Gamiani and the circumstances under which it was written. It goes on to outline the early publications and critiques some particular editions especially the illustrated copies, and finishes up giving an outline of the story. It does not appear to reference or name the origin of the particular edition it contained . It is possible that this introduction was lifted from another source. My best reference for dating is the design of the the small in text figures which have a very distinctive, ” flapper” feel to them hence my guess at 1920-1930. The only reference that is close, is all but useless:-GAMIANI [S.I.: n.p., n.d., c.1930].8vo. 112pp. Printed on velin. 5 illustrations.(Dutel: 1646.)

The illustrations appear to be signed either P.S or P.J.

Your assistance would be gratefully received if you have any knowledge at all about this title.

Bookcase Archives : Van Rod, Aimé, Asmodée, Visites fantastiques au pays du fouet. Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies. Paris 1922. Illustrated by G.Topfer

This Book

Although normally cheaply produced , titles in this series enjoy profuse illustrations and this is no exception.

Title Page

Van Rod, Aimé, Asmodée, Visites fantastiques au pays du fouet. Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies. Paris 1922. Illustrated by G.Topfer
in original illustrated publishers card covers printed in red and blue. Illustrated cover, 1 frontispiece, 3 full page and many in-text illustrations in B&W, 4 color illustrations.223 pages. Certainly an obscure title and rare in original covers, a very nice copy only marred by light sporadic spotting throughout.

As  mentioned elsewhere, the majority of flagellation novels avoided prosecution at the time they were published, only to become the focus of prosecution in the 1950’s.
Bécourt 75: Sentenced by the 10th Chamber Seine Correctional Court on 8 May 1950 and then by the Paris Court of Appeal 10th Chamber on 27 October 1953; sentenced by the 17th Chamber Correctional Court of the Seine on November 25, 1953 and by the Paris Court of Appeal 10th Chamber on June 9, 1954.

This Book

Strictly speaking, not erotica, but certainly curiosa and having already listed the Carrington English translation, published as “Weird Women”, it seems fair to post this edition, especially as it features a great deal of nudity, composed by an outstanding artist that I have never featured before.

Les Diaboliques , ‎d’Aurevilly Barbey‎. Librairie de la Collection des dix (A Romagnol) nd (1910). Unique edition, printed especially for the Principe de San Faustino. Spine in leather over red marbled boards, some tearing to inner edge of title page, and binding separating at back of book. light finger marking and spotting throughout. Overall about good. A Unique edition with some illustrations not in other copies of this edition.

Charles Carrington Collection: STORIES FROM THE FOLK-LORE OF RUSSIA.[ALEKSANDER N. AFANASYEV] Done into English by the translator of The book of exposition in the science of coition, The old man young again, and other charming works ejusdem farinae. Paris: Charles Carrington,1897

This Book

Another Carrington from the Michael Neal collection, and a marginal one for this site, as it is bawdy rather than erotic, but a marvellous volume nonetheless. It has the distinction of being in English and being profusely illustrated, Carrington’s published in English often have old plates or engravings, but unlike French editions, rarely have commissioned illustrations, this one is an exception. Like many other Carrington publications it is very hard to find. It also has the distinction of possessing my favourite Cover/Title Page and an outstanding frontispiece.

https://www.eroticabibliophile.com/publishers_carrington_m_o.php

I must take issue with the bibliographic description as far as the illustrators are concerned, the frontispiece and 6 colour wash illustration are by J.Wely, the majority of the in text illustrations and other page illustrations are signed or initialled by J.Wely and G.D (Georges Dola), a few of the illustrations are unsigned, but I cannot recognise them as Bayros, perhaps someone out there can put me straight on this. The book is complete and there are no missing pages.

Paris: Charles Carrington, 1897.13.97cm. x 21.59cm. xix + 265pp. Limited edition of 500 copies on Van Gelder. Frontispiece done in green, peach and black by J. Originally published in Geneva, c.1872 as Russikya zavetniya skazki (Russian Secret Tales) by Aleksandr N. Afanasyev. This was a supplement to Afanasyev’s Narodnye russkie skazki (Popular Russian Tales), 1855-1864. In 1883 a group of folklorists published a yearbook of erotic folklore titled Kryptádia (Secret Things), the first volume being a French translation of Afanasyev’s Russikya zavetniya skazki. Isidore Liseux also translated Afanasyev’s text into French in 1891. That edition being the text Carrington used to translate this present work into English [See Legman: The Horn Book, p.475-476].
