Another late clandestine publication, Peter Mendes in his “Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English” Scolar Press 1993/1998, at index 87 A/B, lists 3 copies, the first with the original title Printed for the Nihilists Moscow, 1881, (possibly published by Brancart) the second with the variant title “My Life’s Adventures” The Erotica Biblion Society 1904, he references a third copy which appears to match the one listed here. The original edition was prosecuted and presumably lead to the change of title in the Erotica Biblion edition.

This copy is embellished with three engraved erotic illustrations that look to me to have come from an earlier publication if this indeed the 1925, edition, Mendes does speculate about an unseen edition which might have served as the master for this copy which probably originated with J.Berge, in Rotterdam c 1902-1905.

Pleased to have found two very small printers devices in this copy that serve with the title as decorations to this page, the floral banner between the images does not come from this book.

Books for Trade: Anon, Cherries. New York: The Erotica Biblion Society of New York. Undated (1930’s)

A rather interesting oddity, a collection of explicitly erotic short stories, embellished with six unsigned line drawings. Unable to say whether this Erotica Biblion Society is the same as the Erotica Biblion Society of London and New York, the former city having been excluded from this publication. Also unable to find any bibliographical reference to this title, the supposed date is provided by the person I obtained the title from. The book is nicely produced and a good quality print job, on fine paper, the illustrations, have some similarity to those for “Nunnery Tales”, but are not really close enough to confirm with any certainty that they are by the same artist.

Any bibliographical information would be gratefully received.

Previously presented in list form only, rare with the tipped in illustrations, and Flores seems to have had the upper hand on quality over that of Losfeld’s productions.

Books for Trade,René-Michel Desergy, Diana Gantée Collection des Orties Blanches, illustrated by Léon Pierre, Paris 1932

Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists, the title on offer here was by a lesser artist who for me falls into the category “amateur”.

As with other imprints many of these titles were reprinted in the 1970 and 1980’s. Also curious to note was that this particular title was prosecuted in 1951, and subsequently lost appeals against the decision in 1953 and 1954. Given that the reprint did not appear until 1975, I am curious as to how it came to court in the 1950’s, some 20 years after the original publication, is there I wonder another reissue in the 1950’s not recorded?.

Another clandestine Losfeld, title, previously posted in list form, but here with the illustrations. As far as I can ascertain the text is a reprint of an 18th century gallant, but I would be interested to know what title the illustrations were from originally.

Well yet another clandestine edition of Fanny Hill, and although I can find references to Kamashastra editions I cannot find an exact match for this one, it is stated a limited edition of 250 copies, I have found editions with and without plates, but this one has a frontispiece and 11 explicit plates, after Paul Avril, and all but one are hand coloured, or at least partially coloured, I must say the plates are a bit odd and appear to have been coloured by someone who was possibly colour blind. Regardless a rare enough item and interesting in its oddity.

NOTE: The illustrations are on glossy paper in the book itself, and are none to clear to the eye, I have scanned and darkened the images, in the hope of making them more visible on the the screen, the results are mixed. I hope you enjoy them.

No publisher ,No Date . [ Paris . Eric LOSFELD . Second edition of a Surrealist pornographic novel c1960 . DUTEL 1673 ] 119 pages + 16 plates by André COLLOT originally belonging to “Symphonies Amoureuses” . Long thought to have been the work of Losfeld himself, under the pseudonym, Alexandre Leucade ( which crudely translate to “Alexander the Great”), the author is now accepted to have been Ado Kyrou.

This press in its various incarnations was a prolific producer of flagellation novels, between the wars, many of them illustrated by Carlo, a large number of these titles were reissued by Editions Dominic Leroy in the 1980’s. Original editions are increasingly hard to find, and this title is a a nice example of a scarce original complete with a Frontispiece and 16 illustrations.

René-Michel Desergy. Probable, French author who sometimes used the pseudonym Désiré Van Rowel.

CARLO:French artist whose real name is unknown. Carlo has possibly worked as a cartoonist and illustrator to the review “Humor” under the pseudonym Charléno (Charles Hénaut?). “Exhibited at the Salon from 1912 to 1914

Something of a diversion from my usual fare , but an opportunity for me to be self indulgent and enjoy a beautifully produced book by a rogue publisher, Auguste Brancart , who published English pornography such as “My Secret Life”, working with Edward Avery, and also produced English translations of French erotica, despite being prosecuted in 1828 this title appears to have been openly published in 1883, however Brancart was never far from trouble.He was already under investigation by the police in 1885, 1886 and 1888 and moved to Antwerp in 1894.

Note: For Jacques-Antoine-René Perrin, according to Gay in his “Bibliographie des ouvrages relatifs à l’amour, aux femmes, au mariage et des livres facétieux, pantagruéliques, scatologiques, satyriques… ” indicates that the book was also attributed to Claude-Joseph Dorat.

This book is a small work of art , from the quality of the paper- Bel exemplaire tiré sur grand papier vergé (non-justifié) avec 3 belles eaux-fortes, to the engravings, as well as a small selection of printers devices and engraved capital letters.

Most early editions of this title appear to have been clandestine publications, and later versions tend to lack the third part in which our heroine (victim) is pursued by a flagellant, rather wonderfully depicted in the engraving below.

The only real way to enjoy such a book is to hold it in your hands, it has real substance, however given that the majority of my audience appear to be mute voyeurs, I post for your viewing pleasure, the rather innocent imagery of this wonderful volume.
