A special New Years treat for all my viewers, this astoundingly beautiful art-deco masterpiece, is a very recent acquisition for me and is already one of my most prized titles. The description below is from Céline of Art_Cash, from whom I purchased the book, I have left the translation to Google, and if not grammatically correct it is  I think, charming, as is this book, Unlike Céline, I have no doubt as to its authenticity. This comes from very close examination of the quality of the text, and the delicate colouration of the illustrations, which in some cases is barely visible to the naked eye, but shows up quite well with enhanced high definition scanning.

The work here has neither date nor illustrator, nor editor, nor actual author to speak of, if not the Nelly and Jean dummy. The supporting of this draft (and / or reproduced), the edition would not have been put on the market and would have been reserved “for authors and their friends” – the same formula is repeated in the title pages to indicate to whom the work was engraved and printed. It would have been limited to 295 copies. The latter, one of 240 copies of the regular edition printed on Arches and numbered 56-295.

It seems that the book corresponds to that described by Pia (The Hell p The books 519, 983.): Same number of sheets, whether or justification, etc. So to believe the latter, the work could date the years 20-30 (1929), the illustrator would Jean Dulac (1902-1968) and its author, Marcel Valotaire (1889-), known for writing several books of Art (The Museum of Angers, the French ceramic) or critical studies of writers and illustrators of the 30s (Hémard, Wild, Charles Martin Plowman, etc.)

Quite rare for a curiosa, the book – at least in the original edition – is not only sought after for his erotic engravings but also to its text. It consists of epistolary exchanges between Nelly, a student young ingenue, and John his tutor. According to the “editor”, it would be a true match that would tell the “first hour” of their “beautiful and simple” story. By “early hours” understand the discovery and learning the sex by Nelly that John gives his  special”lessons”. It turns out that Nelly is a brilliant student ^^. Beyond that, it would just be “the story of those who love without any calculations, only for enjoyment to abstract divinely in the intoxication of the heart and senses, due to other more for oneself … “What a program !!

In terms of prints, they are in number of 46: 19 in the first volume 27 and into the second. In fact, each volume contains: a sticker on the cover, frontispiece, title a thumbnail of a rectangular lamp round ass and several in-text larger or smaller size. All the illustrations are very delicate, colored in places very small brightly colored buttons. Suddenly, it’s pink, another red, blue, green, yellow. This is a very elegant Curiosa, full of character!

Artist Comparison: Marilac (Mario Laboccetta) illustrations for Mlle Cinglade. Editions Prima. 1936

In my recent post regarding the Search for “Wighead”, I posted images from various books in my collection, but made reference to one that is not, but for which I have copies of the illustrations.

By popular demand (actually only Camillemm), I am posting the full set of images from “Mademoiselle Cinglade” written by Andre Vergereau, published by Editions Prima in 1936. I am indebted to Christophe Bier for copies of the illustrations.

Unfortunately they are low resolution, and I have done my best to enhance them, but they are still very striking (no pun intended), you can now make a fair comparison to all the other “wighead” and “Davanzo”, illustrations on my site.

Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists.

This title is rebound with original covers preserved and embellished with 16 heliogravures signed N.Carman.

The Search for Wighead, a comparison of artists and publishers.

I seem to have become somewhat obsessed by the uncovering of the identity of the artist known by the pseudonym “Wighead”, so if anyone already has the answer, please put me out of my misery and tell me who they are.

In the mean time, I have already started to explore the possible link between” Wighead”  and  “Marilac”, who I referenced in a previous post which included a communication with Chrispophe Bier, who is of the view that the two artist are one and the same i.e. Mario Laboccetta.

Link: Jim Galding. A Genoux Esclave.

Having explored further I have located a third candidate, another apparently concealed identity under the name “Davanzo”, who for me is now a favourite suspect for “Wighead”,  as Davanzo appears to arrive on the scene illustrating for Orties Blanches at the same time that illustrations appear by “Wighead” for Les editions du Couvre-Feu. I am unsure why a different name would be required, other than the fact that they were titles issued by competing publishers. It could of course be that they were two separate identities with one copying the other. I know beyond doubt that “L’Éducation de Chérubin” was printed by L’Imprimerie Darientiere in January 1934, from the printers colophon at the back of the book.

All three artists illustrated more conventional works using these same pseudonyms, Davanzo appears to have been the first of the three to illustrate flagellation themed novels, “L’Éducation de Chérubin” and “Iréne et son Esclave” both for Orties Blanches both dated 1934, (I now know that “Iréne et son Esclave” , was actually first printed in December 1933,and reissued in 1934) Most of his mainstream work was for Nillson and Gründ, as was the other work of both both Wighead and Marilac

Wighead illustrated several titles for Les editions du Couvre -Feu and Le  Jardin d’Eros between 1934 and 1938, although really difficult to date the earliest of these appears to be “L’Orgie Dominatrice” with an estimated date of 1934.

Marilac appears to have illustrated only two flagellation  books, both for Editions Prima , the cover only of “L’ Amour Fouette” (1930?) and all the illustrations for “Mademoiselle Cinglade”(1936), I am not confident of the date for “l’ Amour Fouette” as this coincided with the same title being published by  Editions Montmartre, apparently illustrated by “A Sauvage”, I have not had sight of this book.

So this is an attempt to start some discussion about these illustrators and publishers, there may well be other titles that I am unaware of, and I would be pleased to have any information that anyone can offer. But for the moment and hopefully to stimulate some interest I have selected below some illustrations which are chosen to show similarities in style between the three artists. I am limited in my ability to do this by the titles I have, I am fairly well off for” Wighead”, and although my illustrations for “L’Orgie Dominatrice” are from the German reprint they are the same illustrations. For “Davanzo” I have only  “L’Éducation de Chérubin” altough a copy of “Irene et son Esclave” is on its way. And for Marilac I have “l’Amour Foutte”, but as he only illustrated the cover of that, I have relied on the kindness of Christope Bier, who has provided copies of the illustrations for “Mademoiselle Cinglade”.

Below are sample images and links to other posts that have all the illustrations, your views and opinions are encouraged. so tell me what you think.

This is the first of a short series of listings featuring” Orties Blanches”, titles from the 1930’s which is rapidly evolving into the period of the greatest interest for me, primarily because of the style and content of the illustrations across a wide range of competing publishing houses, and also of the artists themselves and the mystery surrounding the identity of particular individuals. But more of that in later listings.

This title is rebound with original covers preserved and is illustrated with 12 engraved plates by “Davanzo”, this illustrator is of interest because in some of his illustrations there is a striking resemblance to “Wighead”, I will simply do a normal listing in this post, but if anyone is interested, see if you can pick out which of the illustrations below I think are like “Wighead”. In my next listing which should be posted in the next few days, I will do comparisons between illustrations by this artist (Davanzo), “Marilac” and “Wighead”, to the best of my knowledge the only one that can be linked to a named artist is “Marilac” (Mario Laboccetta), but was he using other pseudonyms?

Books for Trade: Anon [THIRION, André.] – Le Grand ordinaire. n.p., n.d. [c. 1955.] Losfeld

A very unusual one for me but it has the Losfeld connection, the bibliographical description is courtesy of Patrick Kearney’s, Scissors and Paste site, and without wishing to take issue with his description, there are (in my copy at least) 7 illustrations, one is repeated twice “Le dialectique du Maitre et de l’Esclave“, also if you count the “Fin” that makes 8 illustrations. The book was published originally published clandestinely during the war, and again clandestinely in 1955 by Losfeld.

[THIRION, André.] – Le Grand ordinaire. n.p., n.d. [c. 1955.] 8vo. pp. 123. Six illustrations by [Oscar Dominguez]. [ Dutel, 1676.] With the exception of the wrappers, a facsimile reprint of the original edition of this surrealist work, first published secretly in 1943 by Robert J. Godet. The majority of the print run was seized by the Gestapo in 1944

Les Plus Belles Poses de l'Amour _0001

A very brief listing, purchased on a whim , because the publisher sits within the group, of Les Editions du Couvre-Feu, et al, something of a disappointment, because the book arrived sealed in a plastic bag, the type of item I recall seeing displayed by some Bouquinistes on the banks of the Seine many years ago, upon opening the bag I was assailed by the smell of damp paper, but the book seems generally OK, however it is being kept in a more book friendly bag now, the disappointment comes from the total lack of “Belles Poses” as teasingly promised on the cover, the blank pages are there but the images long gone, however the cover image is charming, the book was cheap and the entire enterprise is rescued by a single  sheet of advertising  that was folded inside, for me worth the price of the book on its own.

New into the Collection: Flesh Raffle, Jim Dobbs, Odyssey Library Copenhagen 1963

In all its battered glory, the first new addition to my primary collection for some weeks, and a very important find for me.

Very pleased to add this one but still looking for others in this series, do not mind having multiple copies as this improves my trading options.

As always the bibliographical description is courtesy of Patrick Kearney, The Paris Olympia Press, The Liverpool University Press 2007. The index number corresponds to the actual location of the description in the bibliography.

A comparison of the two books, however, has not yet been undertaken because a copy of the supposed American reprint has not been located. Other books appearing under this pseudonym from other publishers in the United States include In Lust and War (1969) and Island Lust (1969). A third novel, Chateau Venus, was published by the Olympia Press in New York in 1968.

Sous La Jupe Couvre-Feu 1933_0003

Having earlier posted the 1936 edition bearing the same title, I am very pleased to post the 1933 edition, the similarity between the two starts and ends with the title, this edition is basically an advertising booklet, the “Suggestive” illustrations exist only in the catalogues at the start  and end of the book, and the text appears to consist of excerpts from other publications. I think this is a marvellous item and I hope you will agree, I have set it out in the sequence of the contents, the illustrations, for the advertisements are small, and I have (in most cases), set out the full page followed by an “exploded image of the illustration. The image above at the head of this post is taken from the first page of adverts and is my favourite piece in the book and I have used it to space the images in the following. The insert below is from “Les Editions du Couvre-Feu” published by editions Astarte in 2013. P156

Sous La Jupe Couvre-Feu 1933_0036

The brain behind the bibliographical content of “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, is Christophe Bier, who I also believe to be the originator of much of the material used to illustrate that book.
