This Book

Returning to my many unlisted flagellation titles, here we have another Carlo title, this one was reissued by Dominique Leroy in the 1970,s. This book is the original. Always collectible, the original editions are now very rare indeed.

Those of you who follow my blog regularly, may recall my referring to myself as a master of the incomplete. This is because i have to search far as wide to find books that are often unavailable at any price, this means I sometimes buy incomplete items so that I can record their existence, before they disappear forever. It is true to say that many of these titles may now be available as eBooks, however despite the name they quite simply are not books at all.

The present title is such an example, and as the saying goes ” You cant judge a book by its cover”, that is especially pertinent to this book because it doesn’t have one! Yes sadly the colour illustrated cover is missing, I purchased it as it is with a black and white facsimile of the original cover, because there is not another copy on sale anywhere in the world. Anything illustrated by Carlo is in high demand and sometimes collectors need to buy what is available, so as to have a copy until a better one comes along. As I do not collect these titles I must take what I can get, which means I can share the result with you. If anyone can provide a colour scan of the original cover, to enable me to complete the listing I would be extremely grateful, and give them a mention.

Well this was very nearly impossible, despite my invention; the BBDSM featured in my last post, because of a combination of my disability and the tightness of the binding, it was not possible to obtain flattened images, so this listing is one of my less satisfying.

[CARLO]. DESERGY, René-Michel. Les Tyrans passionnels. Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies, 1935. Rebound in quarter black leather, on speckled boards, spine with 6 raised bands inter-spaced with gilt decorations , title and author in gilt lettering, Original covers not preserved (25,2 x 17 cm) 266 pages. Contains the frontispiece and 9 other illustrations, (lacks 3 illustration) which I have been able to provide images of below. There is some wear to the open edge of the boards, and some aging to pages, the illustrations have finger marks on page edges (outside of the illustrations), overall good +

This is a very rare title and worth having the image pages at least professionally cleaned. This title, is in a larger format and printed on high quality paper, than any of the other titles in this series, the illustrations were inspired by photographic models,and the frontispiece is an example of the style of Carlo’s other pseudonym “Charleno”.

I wish I could tell you more, but there is not a lot of information out there, perhaps someone could contribute more information. I suggest that those of you who read French, should obtain a copy of”Carlo” by Robert Merodack’, published by Editions Dominique Leroy 1984, which offers an affordable access to a large number of Carlo illustrations. This volume confirms a frontispiece and 12 illustrations is correct for “Les Tyrans passionnels”.

Another oddity, purchased blind from a dubious web site, however turns out to be quite an interesting item. It is an original edition, lacking a title page, but with 11 of the 12 illustrations hand coloured. I rather like it and I hope you do.

Rebound in brown boards, author and title pasted on label on the spine. 22 x 14 cm, 219 pp. Original cover bound in, but lacking title page. Cover illustration and12 illustrations ( 11 hand coloured, 1 on plain paper tipped in) All by Carlo. Numerous chapter headings and cul de lamps. Overall condition is good plus.

Untypical of this illustrator, who normally creates in the extreme bizarre illustrations.However his work is highly collectible and very rare, and I am unable to find a listing for this title anywhere. So i hope you enjoy having sight of this rare item.

Another rare flagellation title, I am not sure whether this title was reissued by Editions Dominique Leroy in the 1970’s, as were many of the other Carlo illustrated titles, but in any case it is worth noting that the illustrations in the original editions are on papier couche, or glossy paper, as a result they are much more vibrant than the reprints where the illustrations were on ordinairy cheap paper stock. This is the original edition and I hope you like the images.

This press in its various incarnations was a prolific producer of flagellation novels, between the wars, many of them illustrated by Carlo, a large number of these titles were reissued by Editions Dominic Leroy in the 1980’s. Original editions are increasingly hard to find, and this title is a a nice example of a scarce original complete with a Frontispiece and 16 illustrations.

René-Michel Desergy. Probable, French author who sometimes used the pseudonym Désiré Van Rowel.

CARLO:French artist whose real name is unknown. Carlo has possibly worked as a cartoonist and illustrator to the review “Humor” under the pseudonym Charléno (Charles Hénaut?). “Exhibited at the Salon from 1912 to 1914
