L’Écrin du rubis ou Les Délices des dessous Au Cabinet du Livre [ Jean Fort ] 1932. illustrated by P.Silex

This is the first edition and a beautiful item, a later reissue in the same series and illustrated by Herric was published in 1939 and is linked at the base of this post as is another work, published under the title Confidences égarées, belonging to the original manuscript of L’Écrin du rubis  which  was also published by Jean Fort, in the Collection des Orties Blanches, in 1932.

Contained in the book was an advertising flier for the title  a single sheet of glossy paper with the cover duplicated on the front and the prospectus, printed on the verso.

THIS BOOK

Wrappers and contents are complete and in Very Good condition. The contents are shaken and  some gatherings are loose and attached only at the base. Primarily due to a heavy book in a lightweight cover. It is quite possible that the is the only copy of this tiny limitation  (IV /VI- 1 of 6), still in its original covers. Any buyer should consider having this book professionally repaired or rebound. Book is still overall Very Good.

Sample text ( English Translation)

The mischievousness of this merry-go-round, the spice of what it had at once of secrecy and publicity, the perversity of my attitude of accomplice and victim, what was troubling in enjoying a pleasure which they thought I was taking without my knowledge, all this added to the feeling of being violated in the private of my elegance, made me taste a strange flavor of these audacities. I could not tolerate them with a coarse rut that strayed unceremoniously on my flesh through the sheath of my panties. But I was defenseless against anyone who lingered with delight on all the details of an attire to which I myself, had attached all the libertine intentions by the choice I had made of it, and calculated with a view to a more sensitive touch.

Another flagellation title, this one a small volume sparsely illustrated , but very nicely done by Louis Malteste. A rare find this one and now just a few years short of its one hundredth birthday.

Books for Sale: Pierre de Jusange: La Comtesse au Fouet, Collection des Orties Blanches, Paris n.d. (1926), illustrations hors-texte de Martin Van Maele.

This Book

Well controversy, pursues me whatever I do. And another bibliographical puzzle. This one fits a sub collection, in that it has Van Maele illustrations, but once listed it can go, hence Book for Sale. My attempt to  confuse in this instance, is that all other copies on sale and the bibliographical reference indicate 7 hors-texte illustrations, but there are 8, as evidenced by the listing below.

As those of you that read, may already have spotted, I am displaying images in book form, so if you want just the image you will have to do a little work. I am no longer flat bed scanning anything, the books are too fragile and/or rare. Plenty of other sites have sterile paint shopped images, so go look at them. Any way my eyesight, perspective and patience are all completely shot and I cant be bothered.

Pierre de Jusange: ( Pierre Dumarchey) La Comtesse au Fouet, Collection des Orties Blanches,79 rue de Vaugirard, Paris n.d. (1926), illustrations hors-texte de Martin Van Maele. Printer, Saint-Amand (cher) – Imp R Bussiere.  In original publishers thin card covers, printed in red and black on front cover and spine, original price of 25 Francs on spine. Back cover printed in black with list of 10 other titles in the series. 253 pages. ( 20 x 13.5 x 3 cm. weight 300 gr). illustrated with 8 (eight) (huit), full page illustrations by Martin Van Maele (unsigned), The condition of the book is good, though printed on very cheap paper, which has yellowed with age, there is some splitting to the tail of the spine at the front cover, (see images). The 8 illustrations which have been bound in, are on much better quality paper than the text, and have fared better, so I grade them as very good.

Books for Sale: François Béroalde de Verville – Le Moyen de Parvenir Paris, Jéan Fort, 1921. Van Maele illustrations.

Something of a labour of love, this being one of my “very long” listings. I find myself in conflict regarding books vs illustrations, my inclination is always to give precedence to the books, but in this image rich environment, and from my own experience as a blog editor, I am aware that the books are, to most viewers, of only secondary importance.

In some cases, and this being a prime example, the illustrator is so skilled and of such mischievous humour, that he tells the stories in pictures, and brings to life some ancient text, that otherwise, would likely be forgotten.

This particular edition of  “Le Moyen de Parvenir”, is so richly illustrated that I suspect that the majority of the images, which are chapter headings and tail pieces have never been published on line as a group. This listing is an attempt to remedy that.

This is a multiple, phase listing, as it describes one of my two copies of this edition, in this case the one in its original paper covers, this also meets my criteria as a rescued book, as it requires some repair work. Other information is gathered from various sources and appropriate links are given.

The other purpose of this post is to attempt to give as full as possible imagery to accompany  a very detailed textual description of this title from the book:-

Books for Sale: LE LIBERTINAGE du RETROUSSE; G. Donville (text) and Cheri Hérouard (illustrations) Published by Aux Galants Passe-temps, 1937

A fragile item purchased cheaply on eBay, worth the money for the illustrations alone, strictly speaking not a flagellation novel but an erotic Lesbian romance, beautifully illustrated by Herric with images of gorgeous girls attired in ribbons and lace and silken underclothes.

Any Questions please leave a comment

More than happy for you to copy images, but please have the courtesy to reference this site if you post them elsewhere.

LE LIBERTINAGE DU RETROUSSE PAR : G. DONVILLE  Aux Galants Passe-temps, 1937

Libertinage_0002

In original printed paper wraps (red and black), over plain card covers. Number 733 of a limited edition of 2000 copies, adorned with 16 heliogravures by “Herric” Cheri Hérouard. 252 pp.

Aux Galants Passe-temps, 1937. Couverture rigide rempliee.Edition originale.

The illustrations are some of the finest I have seen, and although low on sexual content they are truly erotic as a result, I suspect that the low level spanking content is a (transparent) cover for the Lesbian theme of this book, where from the illustrations at least all participants appear to be young ladies, even though sometimes thinly disguised as young men.

Enjoy the beautiful illustrations.
