Charles Carrington Collection: Clandestine Title; Anon, Memoirs of a Russian Ballet Girl by the author of Callipyges Monte Carlo (Paris) for Private Circulation Only, 1901.

This Book

This for me was a major find, just to be very clear from the start, this is a listing for the first volume of a two volume edition. Available bibliographical information only indicates two volumes bound as one, and implies that the book was issued in boards,   this is true of , Guacamole, Mendes and The Erotica Bibliophile. From Mendes(138 (A)), he appears to have seen the book as he quotes at length from the introduction.

However all three appear to be referring to the same copy, or a copy of a different limitation Complete in 2 vols of 100 copies produced without the illustrated cover.

As proved by this book, it was issued in two separate volumes, and especially given the magnificently lurid cover illustration of this original paperback, this still leaves me with the problem of locating the second volume, which at only 145 pages on India paper would be very slender indeed, and presumably would have the same cover illustration?

illustration with signature

Incidentally the cover illustration is signed but I cannot decipher the name.

Bibliographical Description

MEMOIRS | OF A | RUSSIAN | BALLET GIRL | BY | THE AUTHOR OF “THE CALLIPYGES” | VOLUME 1 (2) | [decoration] | MONTE CARLO | FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY | 1901

12.7cm. x 19.05cm. Two volumes in one [w/2 title pages]. pp. ix + 222, i + 145. Limited edition of 350 copies probably printed by Theime. Copy seen printed on India paper. Also issued on hand-made paper. Title pages printed in red and black.

A French edition was published by Carrington in 1905 as Mémories d’une Danseuse Russe. Previously published in 1892 by Brancart [under the imprint “sous les gleries du Palais Royal”] as Memoires d’une Danseuse Russe written by E.D. Later re-published in 3 volumes by Hirsch in 1903 [See Mendes: 138-B]. Although Desjardins may be a pseudonym used by Edmund Dumoulin, Mendes argues in his notes to 137-A that Dumoulin and Desjardins may in fact be two different people, with Desjardins the author of flagellation themed novels. Only these E.D./Desjardin texts were translated into English.

(Kinsey: 843.7 E22 m5E 1901. Mendes: 138-A)

Whilst on the subject of different editions, there is speculation as to who E.D, was , with two names apparently sharing the acronym, along with whether in fact there is a direct relationship between the various French and English editions. You can puzzle this out for yourself by following the link below. My thanks to my friend and mentor Pat Kearney

Scissors and Paste (Pat K) Toward a Bibliography of ” E. D.

A clandestinely published edition

One thing I can say with some certainty is that the Carrington editions do differ significantly, the English language edition (this one) is a violent pornographic novel, whereas the French language edition:- “Mémories d’une Danseuse Russe” 1905. retains the flagellation scenes from that English edition but is expurgated of all sexual descriptions.

Unfortunately despite, the obvious evidence of decorative chapter headings and capitals, it is not possible to display more examples because the pages are uncut and will remain so whilst in my possession. This paper is extremely thin and verging on transparent.

The Charles Carrington Collection: (Jean de Villiot) Eaux-fortes pour l’illustration de Étude sur la Flagellation en France & en Angleterre au point de vue médical et historique. Paris, Charles Carrington, 1898.

This extremely rare and beautiful complete set of illustrations, were something of a challenge. Originally I though they referred to a specific title which I couldn’t locate, because of the 1898 date, however research took me to the only titles ” Etude sur la “Flagellation”, and as the 1901 edition is fully and splendidly illustrated these must belong to the unillustrated 1899 edition. I have both editions, but cannot locate any reference to these illustrations in the actual books. So I assume that Guacamole who was wrong about the number of engravings, appears to be correct in saying they were only offered to subscribers who purchased the book:-

ÉTUDE SUR LA FLAGELLATION A TRAVERS LE MONDE
Aux points de vue historique, médical, religieux, domestique et conjugal, avec un exposé documentaire de la flagellation dans les écoles anglaises et les prisons militaires. Paris: Charles Carrington, 1899. 15.24cm. x 23.50cm. xii + 509pp. Printed by Bouillant in a limited edition of 575 copies of which 25 are on Japon, 50 are on Whatman and 500 are on Hollande [copy seen]. Chapter and tail pieces.

The Portfolio

Pasted in Title Panel

CARRINGTON – (Jean de Villiot)
Eaux-fortes pour l’illustration de Étude sur la Flagellation en France & en Angleterre au point de vue médical et historique. Paris, Charles Carrington, 1898. 28.5 x 19.5 cm. Original plain portfolio – on the inside a leaf has been pasted with title and index with the titles of the seven etchings. An inner envelope contains 7 illustrations in four states, (28 in all), etching-engravings on loose sheets of handmade paper, uncut. Portfolio a bit worn, ties gone, envelope browned, but etchings in excellent condition. First Edition. These seven illustrations , according to the printed leaf, were only for sale for those who had bought Étude sur la flagellation. A second leaf pasted at the inside of the envelope advertises the Carrington title Sophie Arnould. Mentioned (but probably not seen) by Pia on col. 429.

According to Guacamole (Charles Carrington (1867-1921). Bibliographie eines Verlags. Berlin, 2005), this publication (nr. 236 in his list) should comprise the 7 illustrations in three states. But he was wrong:-

This Book

This fragile ephemera was gifted to me by my late friend and fellow bibliomaniac Michael Neal; he informed me that this item had originally been the property of Gershon Legman and that the pencil markings in the margins were his handywork. This was the final item that Michael passed to me after weeks of transferring his entire Carrington collction to me from France, I promised him that I would list them all on this site prior to disposing of them, a task I had commenced in 2020, only to have been prevented from continuing because of my own health issues. Now at least partially reinvigorated I am back on task. I hope you like this latest offering.

Catalogue de Levres Rare. Librairie Ch.Carrington 13 Faubourg Montmartre

Books For Sale: Thomas Nash: The Choise of Valentines, or The Merie Ballad of Nash his Dildo.Edited by John S. Farmer. London: [Privately Printed for Subscribers Only] 1899

This Book

Something of an oddity, but a rare and interesting thing in its own right.  This is a reissue of a very rare early erotic verse and apparently the first detailed description of what a dildo is and its potential uses, in English.

My thanks to Patrick Kearney for the bibliographical description For details about the editor of of this and many other weird and wonderful titles-John S Farmer- see link  at base of this listing.

I what I believe to be its original black boards with title in gilt on spine, a very pleasing binding. A 1899, reprint of the rare erotic broadside by Thomas Nash. This book is an odd construction, consisting of-Half title-blank verso-Title page-blank verso-Numbered vii-xii-blank verso-Main Text-numbered 1-23-blank verso- The Epilogue-blank verso- followed by some 20 blank pages. This peculiarity is reference at the foot of the Epilogue. Presumably done to make the item into a proper book, the text is complete and nothing is missing. Although some copies appear to lack the Epilogue.

Footnote to Epilogue

Despite some foxing throughout this is a very good copy of a rare item.

Books For Sale: Nicolas Chorier; The dialogues of Luisa Sigea. Isidore Liseux Paris 1890 (Clandestine Piracy likely USA, C: 1920.

Another rescue book recovered form the depths of my Tardis like bookcase (Who’s it by I hear you ask), sorry!, This poor old book is in a very battered boards, the spine is detaching from the boards, but still hanging on in there, can it be rescued to preserve the lie on its spine that states in gilt, THE DIALOGUES OF LUISA SIGEA-PARIS-ISIDORE LISEUX – 1890

This Book

Why list such a thing? well despite being a pirate  from the States (the binding is certainly in one), this is a very nicely produced book, good paper good print and a faithful textual copy on the original Liseux. However probably more of a privateer, than an honest pirate, as when this book unfurls its true colours, we have coloured illustrations. And very nice they are too.

The Dialogues of Luisa Sigea,- Literally translated from the Latin- of- Nicholas Chorier, -Paris- Isidore Liseux -1890. In black boards with significant ware to all edges, spine with title author, publisher and date in gilt is separating from the covers, Contents very good decorative chapter headings 296 pages + Note of the Editor ( an apology for taking out all the boring bits) + a frontispiece and six, hors-text illustrations in colour.

Clandestine Piracy likely USA, C: 1920

Other giveaways are lack of reference to print and publishing details.

Books for Sale: Jacqueline de Lansay (Johanes Gros), Les délices libertines. Roman inédit. Moncontour, au bonheur des dames. n.d. [Maurice Duflou, circa 1937].

Another curiosity that I have posted before however this second edition has Colour illustrations ( at least most of them are)., I was aware of the edition but had never seen it, and knowing that a complete one, if it could be found would likely be beyond my means, I was fortunate to find this copy and although it lacks 5 of the original 14 illustrations, I have had the  1935 First edition which had the full set of illustrations but in mono.  Therefore I have combined the two listings and where the illustrations below appear in mono, the challenge is for anyone who has copies of them in colour can donate them in jpeg format around 2meg. I credit  any contribution in the listing as a donation by donors name if appropriate

This Book

A very nice clandestine erotica from the 1930’s.

Book for Sale: The Perfumed Garden: A Manual of Arabian Erotology. Sheikh Nefzawi. (Richard Burton) (Abu Abdullah Muhammad ben Umar Nafzawi) Published by Librairie Astra, n.d (Circa 1930) With 6 Illustrations By “Herric”(Cheri Herouard)

This Book

Another puzzle, this time it is about a pretty common title. This one and the “Kama Soutra”, were commonly published by Librarie Astra and others and peddled to the English speaking tourist trade in Paris over many years arguably from the late 1920’s to the 1950’s, This Book differs in that it is on much better quality paper than the normal, the print quality is good and the printers motif is not the usual  Astra one, and it even has a silk bookmark. But most strikingly it is embellished with 6 rather beautiful illustrations by Herric.

I cannot find any reference to these illustrations linked to an English text of this title however on the Bibliocuriosa site there is a reference to-

Vatsyayna, Les “Kama Soutra”.

I have no way of knowing if they are the same illustrations as the link is not linked to an item in the “Bibliocuriosa” collection, so they have not seen a copy.

Books for Sale :LA FLAGELLATION A TRAVERS LE MONDE: Jean de Villiot. La Tradition de la Garde. Charles Carrington. PARIS 1907

This Book

Unusual for me, but this time not a clandestine publication, rather an openly published title on the theme of flagellation, such titles were seldom if ever banned and although produced by the premier pornographer  Charles Carrington, the print and publication details of these books did not require concealment. Carrington produced huge numbers of very expensive books, ranging from reprints of classic “Galants” to pseudo scientific sex books and pseudo historical and even the works of Oscar Wilde. Most of Carrington’s openly published titles were lavish productions on expensive paper and in limited editions, such as the title here, which is rather wonderfully illustrated by Leon Roze. It has the added luxury of supplying all of its own decorations for my listing.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.

Publication Details

The author became famous after shooting Andy Warhol, on June 3rd 1968, in a paranoid episode where she accused Maurice Girodias, the publisher of The Olympia Press, to whom she had recently sold the manuscript of S.C.U.M for $500, of being in a conspiracy with Warhol to steal her work. Although there is no evidence to support such a conspiracy, Girodias ever the opportunist and showman would have been delighted with the publicity and used the event to publicise the book as evidenced by the TIME magazine quote at the head of the front cover.

Much vaunted as a Feminist Manifesto and subjected to a great deal of spin and misuse by the media it is doubtful that it would ever have been a commercial success without the Warhol assassination attempt.

Now for some reason a very collectible edition

Books For Trade: La Grande et Véritable Pronostication des Cons sauvages, avec la maniere de les aprivoiser, nouvellement imprimé par l’autorité de l’Abbé des Conars. À Lyon: Chez Jean de la Montagne, 1610.

Publisher/Printers Decoration

Another recent find from my bookcase this is a difficult one, there are lots of references to the content but the only detail I can locate about an actual book appears in a Christies auction listing, but this appears to be referring to a privately commissioned, 18 th Century reprint, based on this edition.

Extremely fragile and not possible to flat scan hence the poor images.

These appear to be  Rabelaisian Jokes or satires  of a risqué nature that were probably considered pornographic and subject to being banned.

Below is symbol that appears in Carrington’s” The Old Man young again—” 1898. It is placed ahead of the the Authors Prologue , prior to P253. and is a direct translation of the French title of the the book that is the subject of this listing.

In true Carrington style,  the following pages to P 265 are complete Victorian grand verbosity.

There is far too much text in the, Authors Prologue for it to be  based it entirely on our book, But the thing that both have in common, is constant references to “Cons”, in out 1610 edition, and ” Coyntes” in the Carrington.

Both words are vulgar slang for Cunt(s) ( women). The 1610 edition which is in verse, seems to run through the Months of the year and refers to their,  behavior and sexual activities , according to the change of the season. Carrington appears to be listing  Coyntes  by status.

Coyntes of Dames and of Damoiselle
Coyntes of stout Burgess , and of Maiden
Coyntes of Servants , or of Convent- cell

I am inclines to think that Carrington has combined elements of  our 1610 edition and other titles hence  the text at the end of “The Old Man” is explicit and bawdy, full of characters with ridiculous names and some very peculiar sexual habits.

Christies States, that a rare , privately commissioned volume from the late Victorian era contained an 18th century copy of our book along with a selection of other titles all bound together, which they described as a ”  Fine collection of four facetious poems in the style of Rabelais, reprinted in the early 18th century. Entirely rubricated and bound in contemporary olive green morocco.”
