Valerie Solanas. The S.C.U.M. Manifesto. The Olympia Press, Inc. New York 1968. pp. 105. 75¢. “A Paperback Special.” With a “publisher’s preface” by Maurice Girodias & a “Commentary” of 15 pages by Paul Krassner. In original publishers, photographic covers in red, black and white, with minimal edge ware, and slight creasing to bottom corner at back cover. light toning to book block edges (see images). This a very good, near fine unopened unread copy of a 56 year old cheaply produced paperback.
This work was first published in mimeo-graphed form, and sold or otherwise distributed by the author on Manhattan street corners.
The author became famous after shooting Andy Warhol, on June 3rd 1968, in a paranoid episode where she accused Maurice Girodias, the publisher of The Olympia Press, to whom she had recently sold the manuscript of S.C.U.M for $500, of being in a conspiracy with Warhol to steal her work. Although there is no evidence to support such a conspiracy, Girodias ever the opportunist and showman would have been delighted with the publicity and used the event to publicise the book as evidenced by the TIME magazine quote at the head of the front cover.
Much vaunted as a Feminist Manifesto and subjected to a great deal of spin and misuse by the media it is doubtful that it would ever have been a commercial success without the Warhol assassination attempt.
Now for some reason a very collectible edition
