With this title, the author switches illustrators, to the mysterious Sadie-Mazo, this is a significant improvement in the style and content of the illustrations. This copy also has the original duo-tone cover/frontis.

Bookcase Archive : Jean Vergerie, Tortures et lubricité, Collection de l’Églantine, Paris, n.d. (1935)

This Book

Introducing a short series of extremely rare flagellation novels from France in the 1930’s. Collection de l’Églantine, was  a very extreme player in the flagellation market, producing only 8 titles between 1935 and 1938, seven of these penned by Jean Vergerie, with illustrations by Chang Sao or Sadie-Mazo. Any information about this publisher would be most welcome as would scans of any of the illustrations that are missing from the titles in my collection.

Title Page

Rebound in in red cloth over marbled boards, original covers absent, 237 pages, judging by other titles in my collection this volume may have been cropped, as have the illustrations, It is difficult to ascertain how many illustrations were typical and I am aware that some of the later titles had a colour cover illustration. This title has 7 illustrations credited to Lany-R and Sang Chao. Text is complete and overall condition is very good.

Charles Carrington Collection: Jean de Villiot; La Flagellation Amoureuse. Charles Carrington , Paris 1904, illustrations by Martin van Maele.

This Book

Another rare Carrington, with Van Maele illustrations, this one a fairly recent acquisition, and yet another example of the quality of Carrington publications, therefore as much attention given to text and page decorations as the illustrations. This will have been a later rebind as the original covers are only partially preserved.

Charles Carrington Collection: An English Doctor: How Women are Flogged in  Russian Prisons, Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1899

This Book

This one is for the bibliophiles, no illustrations! A very rare item,  effectively a pornographic novelette, written in letter form, a salacious account of an alleged visit by an English doctor to a convent prison  in Siberia, where he witnesses and records the most severe of tortures and punishments to  the female inmates, by which he finds himself extremely aroused, and following his departure from said institution seeks to re-enact his experience by employing prostitutes versed in the fetishist  arts. Strong stuff not for the faint hearted. And yes it is in English, a French version was published in a compendium of flagellation material also by Carrington but minus the sexual content.

List of English Publications printed on back cover, interestingly this is clearly over-stamped “12 Jan 1903”, Title page duplicates the cover and is also printed in red  and black. Contents. 12.07cm. x 19.69cm. xvii + 48pp. Printed on laid paper. Condition, Under a protective opaque sleeve, the book is complete, but shaken, stitching visible, in paper wrap, some light foxing to front cover and spine, Very Good.

The date stamp, obviously a later addition at the top of the back cover is possibly another indication that the books were stored in sheets and wrappers added when a copy was ordered, thus explaining some confusion caused to bibliographers, when advertisements for titles often list books, printed years after  the publication of the book under scrutiny.

Bookcase Archive: J.Van Styk. Épouvantes Voluptueuses. Le Jardin d’Eros. 6 Rue de Tracy, Paris, s.d. [1935]

This Book

It gives me great pleasure, to be able to offer another copy of this incredibly rare title for sale. There are differences, between this copy and the one previously listed  and sold in 2015. The overall condition of this copy is much better than the other, but it was purchased with the mono, illustrations missing, although the blue card mounts are still present, having retained scanned copies of the mono images I have been able to reproduce a full set of the original illustrations, on photographic paper, as this is how the originals were presented, the difference is something that only a purist might find fault with, for me it is another example of book rescue and restoration. The most surprising thing for me is that the colour cover illustration, which is only printed on thin paper, was not removed, and this is probably the rarest element of a very rare book.

Another major player in the 1930’s flagellation market, along with Orties Blanches, were Les Editions Couvre-Feu, followed by Le Jardin d’Eros, distinctly different in that the contents and illustrations were more twisted and aimed at torture and humiliation, unlike the titles issued by Editions Prima, which always seem to have smiling faces , no matter what act of depravity is taking place, the characters in these editions seem to be taking it a bit more seriously.

Bookcase Archive: Armand du Loup, La volupté du Fouet :- Éditions Prima : Paris 1938, 13  illustrations hors-texte de R. Fanny.

This book

Having listed this title before, and having mentioned that it is the most common of all the Editions Prima flagellation titles, it pleases me to add another copy, but this time with the frontispiece, which I have never seen before in any copy I have had (4), or in any other copy I have seen for sale, something of a find, and all the more interesting because the illustration is not repeated in the hors-texte contained in the book.

La volupté du Fouet:  Armand du Loup :- Éditions Prima : Paris 1938, Frontispiece plus 12 (sepia tone engraved plates)  illustrations hors-texte de R. Fanny. ( Etienne Le Rallic-1891/1968). Bookcase Archive: ALÉRA, Don Brennus. – Les Asservies. Tome VI. L’esclave du cuir verni. – Chienne de sa femme de chambre. :Select-Bibliothèque, Sceaux [1928]

This Book

The Select-Bibliothèque was one of several publishing houses specializing in fetish material that flourished in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century. Like the others, notably Jean Fort’s ‘Orties Blanches’ series and the ‘Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies’ of Paul Brenet, the books of the Select Bibliothèque were published openly. Occasionally a title would cross some mysterious line and be prosecuted, but in general, since there was no sex in the conventional sense, these publishers were left to their devices by the authorities.

Despite the openness of these books, the publisher of the Select Bibliothèque remains unknown, at least to this cataloguer. Paul Jérôme writes of Don Brennus Aléra as being “un (ou plusieurs) des pourvoyeurs de l’editeur parisien Massy…”(Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, Paris: Mercure de France,1971, p. 484). In fact, Massy was where the earliest books in the series were published. The almost anagramitic similarity of the names of the authors of most of the books – Bernard Valonnes, Don Brennus Aléra, Roland Brevannes – suggests a single hand at work, and one that spanned in excess of 30 years. And it might not be unreasonable to think that the author was also the publisher.
