L. Perceau.]

The Anti-Justine is a pornographic novelization of Restif de la Bretonne’s own life and sexual debauches, which the author tried to defend “morally” by declaring his book to be an “antidote” to the supposed poison of de Sade; yet the book is a monumental odyssey of sexual depravity that often rivals de Sade in its relentless explicitness.

I have had this title before and in the same edition, the difference is that my earlier copy the illustrations were in colour. Duflou was,  quirky and habitually published titles in a single limitation with both colour and mono illustrations ( I will link other examples below). Whether there was a method by which one could order either is likely to remain a mystery, but the difference does not seem to be stated anywhere in the books. Its difficult to believe that it was just pot luck, but who knows in the crazy world of clandestine publishing.

My copy with colour illustrations went to auction in 2017, but as with all my books I have a record of that edition which I will also link at the bottom of this listing.

I must say that i believe that the mono images were copied from the coloured, as there is a strange depth to them that doesn’t come from shading.

The publisher was something of a character to say the least, and  here I borrow from Patrick Kearneys Scissors and Paste web site:-

Together with René Bonnel, Maurice Duflou was one of the more important erotica publishers in Paris between the two World Wars, but unlike Bonnel he tended to avoid the more avant-garde extremes of the genre, concentrating for the most part on reprints and only the occasional original work. Duflou’s longtime association with Louis Perceau–similar to Bonnel’s with Pascal Pia–produced a number of fine new editions of important eighteenth century works, and several of Perceau’s own compositions and editorial endeavors, including Le Keepsake Galant, a fascinating anthology of shorter erotic pieces, which was by Perceau’s own admission “…l’un des curieux de ceux qu’on publiées sous le manteau au XXe siècle…”. (See Perceau, 327-1.)

In addition to being a publisher, Duflou was also a printer, and there is evidence to suggest that he may have printed books for others. School Life in Paris (‘Privately Printed, 1923’) for example is pointedly described by Pia (2nd ed., p. 684) as being merely printed by Duflou, whereas all the other Duflou titles noted by Pia are French and stated to have been both printed and published by him. This suggests that Duflou’s work as a printer for others may have been limited to cheaply produced English works ‘for the trade’ rather than the finely printed works he did in partnership with Perceau and others.

This Book

Another bookcase find, this one a hard research and my most reliable resource for these books “Bibliocuriosa”, shows this title only under “Artist”, it does reference another title which appears to be a companion to this one that being “Starbine, James, Les Captives de l’Île-sans-nom, Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies, 1932”. Neither title has a current sales listing worldwide. Which emphasises, that outside of personal collections no one has seen this book for some considerable time. So this places some importance of the purpose of this site, which is to record in some detail these marginal titles, which otherwise would be lost for good, barring a short paragraph in some bibliographical reference from people who had not seen,  held or opened the book.

Translated quote from Bibliocuriosa.com

The world of the publication of erotic works in the first half of the 20th century was complicated by the proliferation of publishers’ names used for the publication (and republication) of similar works (whose titles or even pseudonyms could vary).

Librairie Artistique is also known by the following names, which sometimes combine two different names: Artistic and “Fin de siècle” Bookstore, Artistic and Medical Bookstore, Artistic and Medical Bookstore and Parisian Editions reunited, Artistic and Parisian Bookstore reunited, Artistic Bookstore and Parisian Publishing united, etc.

Some of the first publications made at the Librairie Artistique bore the address: 13, rue Thérèse, Paris. We find at the same address the publications “Fin de siècle” (Library, Newspaper, Bookshop of the twentieth century). Some publications clearly indicate the collaboration of the two publishers by the mention: Librairie Artistique et du “Fin de siècle” réunies (1914). Moreover, some publications made at the Librairie Artistique (c. 1910) were first published at the Bibliothèque du journal “Fin de siècle” (c. 1900 or earlier) and some even bear the mention Bibliothèque Artistique et du Fin de siècle (c. 1910) as the name of the publisher in addition to the name Librairie Artistique. We find two names of publishers associated with this period: P. Bergès and F. Pierre (Librairie Artistique and “Fin de siècle”).

From the 1920s onwards, we find only the name of the publisher Paul Brenet associated with the Librairie Artistique and its variants, at 66, boulevard Magenta. This address is also found on publications made at the Édition Parisienne at the beginning of the twentieth century.

To complicate matters further, it is not uncommon for the same book to have more than one publisher mention: a reissue may retain the original title page while changing the cover or vice versa. It is therefore sometimes quite complicated to establish a publication date with certainty. By comparing the appearance of the books (cover, font used, style of the thumbnails, illustrations, etc.), we can at least give an approximate date of publication that we hope will be as close as possible to reality.

We only mention below the works that specifically bear the mention Librairie Artistique on their cover or title page and not all those that could be attributed to this publisher. Civic address: Librairie Artistique (and its variants), 13, rue Thérèse (before 1906) and (after 1906) 66, boulevard Magenta. Paris.

Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists.

Revisiting old sub collections and attempting to link them together also exploring my bookcase to locate items never listed and there are a lot of them, so a brief foray back into the confusion surrounding the various publishers and artists of the burgeoning French flagellation scene, a genre that had remained fairly safe from state interference until the 1950’s, at which time many formally openly published titles were subject to multiple prosecutions (as was this title). My investigations have concluded, that from the 1890’s onwards publishers like Carrington were issuing massive amounts of flagellation titles, but the majority of the ones published , clandestinely were heavy end pornography with flagellation and punishment as an integral part of the story line, very few of these were illustrated.  However French language language editions of the same title were expunged of the sexual content but were often profusely illustrated.

A large number of French publishers started producing profuse numbers of illustrated flagellation , spanking stories from around 1900, and although originally pretty tame, as we head into the 20’s and 30’s more sexual content was appearing and in the run in to WWII, some of the publishers appear to have been in open competition to be the most extreme in violent sexual content, interestingly a significant proportion of this was focused on female domination or FEM/DOM as it came to be known. Much of this activity was generated by business empires that included sex shops selling fetish wear and bondage gear alongside books magazines and other paraphernalia. For more detailed information I recommend Les éditions du Couvre -Fue, edited by Christrophe Bier, éditions Astarté -Paris, 2013.

Charles Carrington Collection: Clandestine Title; Anon, Memoirs of a Russian Ballet Girl by the author of Callipyges Monte Carlo (Paris) for Private Circulation Only, 1901.

This Book

This for me was a major find, just to be very clear from the start, this is a listing for the first volume of a two volume edition. Available bibliographical information only indicates two volumes bound as one, and implies that the book was issued in boards,   this is true of , Guacamole, Mendes and The Erotica Bibliophile. From Mendes(138 (A)), he appears to have seen the book as he quotes at length from the introduction.

However all three appear to be referring to the same copy, or a copy of a different limitation Complete in 2 vols of 100 copies produced without the illustrated cover.

As proved by this book, it was issued in two separate volumes, and especially given the magnificently lurid cover illustration of this original paperback, this still leaves me with the problem of locating the second volume, which at only 145 pages on India paper would be very slender indeed, and presumably would have the same cover illustration?

illustration with signature

Incidentally the cover illustration is signed but I cannot decipher the name.

Bibliographical Description

MEMOIRS | OF A | RUSSIAN | BALLET GIRL | BY | THE AUTHOR OF “THE CALLIPYGES” | VOLUME 1 (2) | [decoration] | MONTE CARLO | FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY | 1901

12.7cm. x 19.05cm. Two volumes in one [w/2 title pages]. pp. ix + 222, i + 145. Limited edition of 350 copies probably printed by Theime. Copy seen printed on India paper. Also issued on hand-made paper. Title pages printed in red and black.

A French edition was published by Carrington in 1905 as Mémories d’une Danseuse Russe. Previously published in 1892 by Brancart [under the imprint “sous les gleries du Palais Royal”] as Memoires d’une Danseuse Russe written by E.D. Later re-published in 3 volumes by Hirsch in 1903 [See Mendes: 138-B]. Although Desjardins may be a pseudonym used by Edmund Dumoulin, Mendes argues in his notes to 137-A that Dumoulin and Desjardins may in fact be two different people, with Desjardins the author of flagellation themed novels. Only these E.D./Desjardin texts were translated into English.

(Kinsey: 843.7 E22 m5E 1901. Mendes: 138-A)

Whilst on the subject of different editions, there is speculation as to who E.D, was , with two names apparently sharing the acronym, along with whether in fact there is a direct relationship between the various French and English editions. You can puzzle this out for yourself by following the link below. My thanks to my friend and mentor Pat Kearney

Scissors and Paste (Pat K) Toward a Bibliography of ” E. D.

A clandestinely published edition

One thing I can say with some certainty is that the Carrington editions do differ significantly, the English language edition (this one) is a violent pornographic novel, whereas the French language edition:- “Mémories d’une Danseuse Russe” 1905. retains the flagellation scenes from that English edition but is expurgated of all sexual descriptions.

The Charles Carrington Collection: (Jean de Villiot) Eaux-fortes pour l’illustration de Étude sur la Flagellation en France & en Angleterre au point de vue médical et historique. Paris, Charles Carrington, 1898.

This extremely rare and beautiful complete set of illustrations, were something of a challenge. Originally I though they referred to a specific title which I couldn’t locate, because of the 1898 date, however research took me to the only titles ” Etude sur la “Flagellation”, and as the 1901 edition is fully and splendidly illustrated these must belong to the unillustrated 1899 edition. I have both editions, but cannot locate any reference to these illustrations in the actual books. So I assume that Guacamole who was wrong about the number of engravings, appears to be correct in saying they were only offered to subscribers who purchased the book:-

Paris, Charles Carrington, 1898. 28.5 x 19.5 cm. Original plain portfolio – on the inside a leaf has been pasted with title and index with the titles of the seven etchings. An inner envelope contains 7 illustrations in four states, (28 in all), etching-engravings on loose sheets of handmade paper, uncut. Portfolio a bit worn, ties gone, envelope browned, but etchings in excellent condition. First Edition. These seven illustrations , according to the printed leaf, were only for sale for those who had bought Étude sur la flagellation. A second leaf pasted at the inside of the envelope advertises the Carrington title Sophie Arnould. Mentioned (but probably not seen) by Pia on col. 429.

According to Guacamole (Charles Carrington (1867-1921). Bibliographie eines Verlags. Berlin, 2005), this publication (nr. 236 in his list) should comprise the 7 illustrations in three states. But he was wrong:-

This Book

This fragile ephemera was gifted to me by my late friend and fellow bibliomaniac Michael Neal; he informed me that this item had originally been the property of Gershon Legman and that the pencil markings in the margins were his handywork. This was the final item that Michael passed to me after weeks of transferring his entire Carrington collction to me from France, I promised him that I would list them all on this site prior to disposing of them, a task I had commenced in 2020, only to have been prevented from continuing because of my own health issues. Now at least partially reinvigorated I am back on task. I hope you like this latest offering.

Something of an oddity, but a rare and interesting thing in its own right.  This is a reissue of a very rare early erotic verse and apparently the first detailed description of what a dildo is and its potential uses, in English.

This peculiarity is reference at the foot of the Epilogue. Presumably done to make the item into a proper book, the text is complete and nothing is missing. This Book

Another puzzle, this time it is about a pretty common title. This one and the “Kama Soutra”, were commonly published by Librarie Astra and others and peddled to the English speaking tourist trade in Paris over many years arguably from the late 1920’s to the 1950’s, This Book differs in that it is on much better quality paper than the normal, the print quality is good and the printers motif is not the usual  Astra one, and it even has a silk bookmark. But most strikingly it is embellished with 6 rather beautiful illustrations by Herric.

I have no way of knowing if they are the same illustrations as the link is not linked to an item in the “Bibliocuriosa” collection, so they have not seen a copy.

Books for Sale :LA FLAGELLATION A TRAVERS LE MONDE: Jean de Villiot. La Tradition de la Garde. Charles Carrington. PARIS 1907

This Book

Unusual for me, but this time not a clandestine publication, rather an openly published title on the theme of flagellation, such titles were seldom if ever banned and although produced by the premier pornographer  Charles Carrington, the print and publication details of these books did not require concealment. Carrington produced huge numbers of very expensive books, ranging from reprints of classic “Galants” to pseudo scientific sex books and pseudo historical and even the works of Oscar Wilde. Most of Carrington’s openly published titles were lavish productions on expensive paper and in limited editions, such as the title here, which is rather wonderfully illustrated by Leon Roze. It has the added luxury of supplying all of its own decorations for my listing.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.
