Having listed this title before, and having mentioned that it is the most common of all the Editions Prima flagellation titles, it pleases me to add another copy, but this time with the frontispiece, which I have never seen before in any copy I have had (4), or in any other copy I have seen for sale, something of a find, and all the more interesting because the illustration is not repeated in the hors-texte contained in the book.

Book for Sale: ALÉRA, Don Brennus. – Les Asservies. Tome VI. L’esclave du cuir verni. – Chienne de sa femme de chambre. :Select-Bibliothèque, Sceaux [1928]

This Book

The Select-Bibliothèque was one of several publishing houses specializing in fetish material that flourished in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century. Like the others, notably Jean Fort’s ‘Orties Blanches’ series and the ‘Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies’ of Paul Brenet, the books of the Select Bibliothèque were published openly. Occasionally a title would cross some mysterious line and be prosecuted, but in general, since there was no sex in the conventional sense, these publishers were left to their devices by the authorities.

Despite the openness of these books, the publisher of the Select Bibliothèque remains unknown, at least to this cataloguer. Paul Jérôme writes of Don Brennus Aléra as being “un (ou plusieurs) des pourvoyeurs de l’editeur parisien Massy…”(Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, Paris: Mercure de France,1971, p. 484). In fact, Massy was where the earliest books in the series were published. The almost anagramitic similarity of the names of the authors of most of the books – Bernard Valonnes, Don Brennus Aléra, Roland Brevannes – suggests a single hand at work, and one that spanned in excess of 30 years. And it might not be unreasonable to think that the author was also the publisher.

Books for Trade: Jean de Villiot: Parisienne et Peux-Rouges, La Flagellation à Travers le Monde. 20 compositions symboliques de Henri Caruchet. Paris: Charles Carrington, 1904.

This Book

Love this one , completely bonkers! The title translates into “Parisiennes and Redskins”, and that is what it is, a flagellation novel based in the wild west, with some French characters, complete with whippings, tortures, scalping and general wickedness. The book is made even stranger by the amazingly weird illustrations, described as “Symbolist”, they do not appear to have anything to do with the story, not a “Redskin” in sight, lots of allusions to vampires, demons, skulls and death and really rather good., in some cases, and rather bad in others.

The book itself is a monster and would make a good weapon, I can imagine myself beating members of the UK government about the head with it, you could probably fell the entire Cabinet, without leaving a dent on this book.

The content is of interest, and working on the principle that no one reading this is remotely concerned with political correctness, I note that Carrington in particular, with his stable of hack writers, was knocking out flagellation books at an incredible rate,  and produced books, from pseudo scientific and folklore to unashamed exploitative fiction around this theme. The current title, being an example of “Flagellation Around the World”. He had already hit the States once with “The Memoirs ofDolly Morton”, (1899) or as the French edition is called, “En Virginie”, (1901) which tipped a wink at the moral indignation over slavery in the openly published editions and  produced a pornographic novel in the same title in the clandestine edition  “The Memoirs of Dolly Morton”. Philadelphia: Society of Private Bibliophiles 1904 . It is worth noting that the English and French editions of the same title often vary in content, as a rule of thumb, those published under the Charles Carrington imprint are primarily concerned with flagellation and violence of all kinds and were openly advertised and sold. Whereas titles published under his clandestine imprints usually have sexual content.

Different periods interest me enormously, and I do find myself drawn to the  1920’s and 30’s in respect of the quality and variety of erotica being produced, ironically my collecting interest, and indeed my primary collection, is non illustrated and 1950’s. But there are similarities, in the nature and patterns of behaviour in the publishers of such material regardless of period. Carrington would have been completely familiar with the tricks and dodges of Maurice Girodias , who was operating half a century later. Equally I think that the flagellation material being produced in the 30’s by Editions du Couvre-Feu, and other imprints of that stable and its competitors owe a great deal to Carrington, and in fact may have stolen material from his, by then outdated, monolithic Victorian tomes.

Bibliographical information on this one is non existent, but I have two copies, this copy and a luxury copy (bigger!), they are both rebound, in this copy only the back cover is preserved. The original cover is identical to the title page.

The other copy will (eventually) be listed in My Charles Carrington Collection.

Title Page

Jean de Villiot: Parisienne et Peux-Rouges, La Flagellation à Travers le Monde. Vingt compositions symboliques de Henri Caruchet. Paris: Charles Carrington, 14 Faubourg Monmatre, 1904. 604 pages, Printed by Alencon. – Imp. Veuve Felix Guy et Cie.  Presented  in red and black, each page of text embellished with the same red decorative border as the title page.

(This Book), rebound in blue leather spine  and front edges, over pale blue patterned boards, with matching lining. Spine with , author, title and artist embossed in gilt. Dimensions (inc. Binding) (22.5 x 16.0 x 6.5. cm) (Weight 1.3 kg)Contents: Original cover and spine not preserved , original back cover bound in. Frontispiece and 19, delicate watercolours by Henri Caruchet, complete and in good order. No indication of paper type, (  but a thick creamy paper of very good quality) No indication of limitation.

Condition: Significant light foxing at both ends of the book, particularly up to page 50, and from page 583 until the end (examples given in the accompanying images)  not affecting illustrations.

Note; I have read elsewhere that this book was originally priced in 1904 at 40 Francs. My Other copy (with spine preserved, shows 50 Francs), perhaps, because it is supposedly a luxury variation, it is certainly larger. It is  also worth knowing that these books were stored as sheets and either sold, on demand in paper bindings or bound to order with the paper guillotined to size to fit the  binding of your choice. Later collectors  also, at times choose to have these books rebound, usually as an act of preservation. From available evidence ( The presence of paper covers) this book was openly for sale as shop stock, hence the price on the spine. Despite  this, the production numbers must have been small, this book was a very expensive production. It is also very rare.

Books for Sale: Pierre de Jusange: La Comtesse au Fouet, Collection des Orties Blanches, Paris n.d. (1926), illustrations hors-texte de Martin Van Maele.

This Book

Well controversy, pursues me whatever I do. And another bibliographical puzzle. This one fits a sub collection, in that it has Van Maele illustrations, but once listed it can go, hence Book for Sale. My attempt to  confuse in this instance, is that all other copies on sale and the bibliographical reference indicate 7 hors-texte illustrations, but there are 8, as evidenced by the listing below.

As those of you that read, may already have spotted, I am displaying images in book form, so if you want just the image you will have to do a little work. I am no longer flat bed scanning anything, the books are too fragile and/or rare. Plenty of other sites have sterile paint shopped images, so go look at them. Any way my eyesight, perspective and patience are all completely shot and I cant be bothered.

Back cover printed in black with list of 10 other titles in the series. 253 pages. ( 20 x 13.5 x 3 cm. weight 300 gr). illustrated with 8 (eight) (huit), full page illustrations by Martin Van Maele (unsigned), The condition of the book is good, though printed on very cheap paper, which has yellowed with age, there is some splitting to the tail of the spine at the front cover, (see images). The 8 illustrations which have been bound in, are on much better quality paper than the text, and have fared better, so I grade them as very good.

Charles Carrington Collection: Jean du Villiot (trans): La Flagellation Des Femmes en Allemagne. illustrations par Martin van Maele, Paris Charles Carrington, 1901.

This Book

Here we are again, back to the strange and complex world of the books published by Charles Carrington, (not his real name), under, in this case his most common imprint, being his company name. Nothing is quite as it seems with these books and if you attempt to follow future listings you will gradually become just as confused about it all as I am. For the moment lets just focus on this one title, except, it isn’t just one title. Confused? Brilliant, let us proceed.

Originally published in German, Written by W. Reinhard.  Lenchen im Zuchthause in c. 1848. Though claiming to be a direct translation of the German Edition, it appears that this the first, French language edition, was actually translated from the First English language edition, published clandestinely by Charles Carrington entitled Nell in Bridewell, in 1900 under his Society of British Bibliophiles imprint.

It is worthy of note that there is often significant variation in content, between French and English translations of Carrington books (in all imprints), A clandestine imprint usually indicating  greater sexual (pornographic) content, although at times the same device was used to hide the publisher from, outraged authors and fellow clandestine publishers when he had nicked their books without consent or in breach of copyright.

Nobody gave a toss about the flagellation stuff, and it was generally, neither censored, nor proscribed. Although this rule, like all good rules, does have exceptions

Brilliant!

As with other listings in this collection, I will distinguish between the actual book (This Book), and the bibliographical description, which describes how the book should have looked when it was made, Even this is subjective as very few bibliographical descriptions are completed “Book in Hand”. Mine are!

Books for Sale:[CARLO]. DESERGY, René-Michel. Les Tyrans Passionnels. Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies, 1935

After multiple attempts to list this title, in a way that met my expectations, made more complex by the Covid 19 outbreak, a new scanner, a badly lit basement, and brain seizures. I have finally decided to present it in this way, I hope you like it, but frankly don’t give a damn if you hate it. My long winded descriptive text probably says too much, but when I wrote it I was a different, more complete person.

(25,2 x 17 cm) 266 pages. Many uncut gatherings, contents in very good, near fine condition, unread copy.
Complete wih the full set of 13 superb heliogravures, from Aquarelles by “du Maitre Carlo”.some light makings to a few images, not impacting on the illustrations, a combined set of formerly tipped in, now loose illustrations, but all originals and likely the only way to obtain the full 13, as I cannot locate any sale record of any edition with the full 13, rarely even 12, impossibly rare and a possibly, a unique copy.

Les Tyrans Passionells the definitive edition?
Carlo needs no introduction, to the initiated, his original editions are amongst the most collectible  in the genre, his fantastic, and outrageous art, has been collected since they were first printed, both art collectors and book collectors have competed to own the original illustrations, in many cases denuding the books of the accompanying images. A complete original with the equally bizarre text they were originally designed to embellish, is a rare thing indeed!
This particular title is, sometimes referenced as an example of the artists transformation into “Charleno”, an apparent alternative identity, this I think is just part of the publishers hype, and the confusing propaganda, which goes with the territory of the selling of such material.
For me this title is in fact, the transition point at which the art became the primary product, and the book the vehicle with which to promote it.

DESERGY, René-Michel. A toute volée.

English Translation of description (with my apologies)

Typical text of flogging literature, by a specialist of the Librairie Artistique . It is a first-person confession of Roberte, initiated by his tutor to the joys of submission, whip, nettles and clyter. The novel is followed by two long letters from readers. The main interest of this book lies in the illustrations by  “Carlo”,  who is, probably the most famous French illustrator of sadomasochism. And also one of the most talented and innovative. His genius went far beyond borders and he inspired the entire post-war American school (John Willie, Nutrix, Eneg, Stanton…).

He had started, under the name Charléno, in the press, before becoming, in the thirties, for the Librairie Artistique, the fascinating Carlo, creator of maddening fetish outfits and inventor of refined tortures. . His main claim to fame is in the extreme, SM novels of Alan Mac Clyde (Despotisme Féminin and  Dolly Esclave for example). A Toute Volée, which is probably his last work (he will die soon after), illustrates a softer erotic universe but equally sensual and exciting.

Robert Mérodack, on this title, writes: “Starting from a refinement at the opposite end of Charléno’s inspiration, Carlo’s work achieves a reconciliation of its two tendencies. This is partly due to the authors he illustrates: unlike slavery that necessarily takes place in the sophisticated world of the powerful, l’éducation anglaise is very well suited to popular characters. It should be noted, however, that the heroines drawn in Dolly esclave and La Madone du cuir verni no longer exhibit, with the same pride the narrow sheaths that delighted their sisters, in Servitude or in Cuir triomphant. The beauties of La Guinguette aux Orties and A toute volée, are no longer cluttered with rigid corsets; their charm no longer comes from the constraints they impose on their figure, but on the contrary, from the freedom of their movements, in Charléno’s naughty drawings. (Carlo, Editions Dominique Leroy, Paris, 1984, p. 94). This is one of Carlo’s rarest titles in the collection.

Books for Trade: Matée par le Fouet: Jean Martinet, . Cover and 12 , superb engraved plates by Herric .Éditions Prima, {1930 }

Previously listed in a rebound copy, listed again here for completeness sake with  the original covers displayed. With all the illustrations, superbly executed (no pun), by Herric:- (Chéri Hérouard)

Chéri Hérouard (1881-1961) was a French artist and illustrator of numerous erotica and spanking novels. He used the pseudonym Herric when he illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches. And as evidenced by these titles also, Editions Prima.

Yet another accidental off shoot of my collecting activity, I found one of these titles and then set out to locate others, they are rather beautiful things and despite the subject matter, which even some erotic  bibliophiles disapprove of, most were not prosecuted at time of publication and only really became the subject of censorship when reprinted , mainly in the 1950’s
