ENGLISH Trans

There was a merry-go-round: almost opposite, they went straight to it, understanding that the lover must at least enjoy the spectacle.

Of course, it would have been easy to get on horseback, on the wooden beast, Betty preferred to sit on her head, her legs dangling. His white thighs could be distinguished; the dress on the front was crumpled up. She appeared thus bare, really drunk, but still splendidly beautiful in her audacity.

The merry-go-round turned and turned, the troop of men on the embankment increased, all the lustful eyes were fixed on the young girl. Elegant people had mingled with this band, theatrical people who had run out of doors.

Betty was immediately classified: great socialite; it was the lady who was pretty, and was making the wedding. They wanted to know to whom it belonged, as Gravant did not seem likely to play the part of banker.

They had to wait a long time, on these wooden horses, she lingered, intoxicated with movements, noises, lights. She was having a great time, no longer being in the need to maintain a minimum of dress. Nor did she count, and that gave her a feeling of immeasurable freedom.

If her good mother had seen her, she would have been blessed. When she jumped to the ground, twenty hands were stretched out to her as if to support her. The owners of these hands were in coats, slapping their ears, and havana on their lips.

She stuck out her tongue and, swaying her hips to escape, her bosom, decidedly curious, suddenly burst out of the satin. Fingers brushed against her, she felt herself feeling boldly. She was seen naked under the dress, and it was useless to be embarrassed.

L’Écrin du rubis ou Les Délices des dessous Au Cabinet du Livre [ Jean Fort ] 1932. illustrated by P.Silex

This is the first edition and a beautiful item, a later reissue in the same series and illustrated by Herric was published in 1939 and is linked at the base of this post as is another work, published under the title Confidences égarées, belonging to the original manuscript of L’Écrin du rubis  which  was also published by Jean Fort, in the Collection des Orties Blanches, in 1932.

Contained in the book was an advertising flier for the title  a single sheet of glossy paper with the cover duplicated on the front and the prospectus, printed on the verso.

THIS BOOK

Wrappers and contents are complete and in Very Good condition. The contents are shaken and  some gatherings are loose and attached only at the base. Primarily due to a heavy book in a lightweight cover. It is quite possible that the is the only copy of this tiny limitation  (IV /VI- 1 of 6), still in its original covers. Any buyer should consider having this book professionally repaired or rebound. Book is still overall Very Good.

The mischievousness of this merry-go-round, the spice of what it had at once of secrecy and publicity, the perversity of my attitude of accomplice and victim, what was troubling in enjoying a pleasure which they thought I was taking without my knowledge, all this added to the feeling of being violated in the private of my elegance, made me taste a strange flavor of these audacities. I could not tolerate them with a coarse rut that strayed unceremoniously on my flesh through the sheath of my panties. But I was defenseless against anyone who lingered with delight on all the details of an attire to which I myself, had attached all the libertine intentions by the choice I had made of it, and calculated with a view to a more sensitive touch.

Books for Sale: The Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure or The Life of Fanny Hill by John Cleland, Hoboken 1929.

Well finally after a level of grief you would not believe i get to list this colour version of this American clandestine “Fanny Hill”.  Which disappeared in the international postage system and was lost untracked despite having a tracking, number for over 2 months. After I actually got my hands on it I found it very difficult to get usable images due to paper quality, tight  binding and glare and shadow from the illustrations being on glossy paper. As a result I have sought the best reproduction I can manage which has often sacrificed squareness for better quality image. But this is a beautiful object good weight and high quality paper, and superb print, An expensive erotica, which can only really enjoyed as in  book form, beautiful in the flesh, and very rare.

Here we have another clandestine copy, one of an apparently endless list of editions of this title, this one fairly clearly places itself in the Americana category, and the printing date is probably fairly accurate, who the publisher or the illustrator were is something of a mystery, however the printers device above is fairly distinctive, and not really pertinent to this particular title, so I wonder if anyone has seen it elsewhere?

The illustrations are often described as Beardlseyesque, and I can see why, but to me also slightly reminiscent of Beresford Egan.

SPECIAL NOTE: 27/07/15; Message from Pat Kearney;

Steve Hi:

I noted your edition of the ‘Hoboken’ Fanny Hill. According to Cliff
Scheiner’s “Compendium” this was first published in 1929 with the
plates — which says are in the style of Elliot Dodd — in colour. A reprint
with the plates in b&w appeared c. 1932. The original ed. with the
colour plates he describes as “rare and desirable.”

Best Pat

This Book. In publishers boards which vary in pattern and colour ,with the uniform, cloth spine, this one with faded label, printers motif barely visible . Very Good cover and contents.

Contents: Blank end-paper; Half Title, verso blank; Frontispiece; Title Page;   verso limitation; facing page; half title Letter The First; verso blank:  Pages 1-211 text. Complete with the 12 surreal and exotic Deco illustrations by an Unknown artist.

This copy is the first edition, published some 3 years before the mono reprints, which still carry the claim on the title page that the illustrations are in color. This is likely because it was to expensive to reproduce them in color again.

NOTE: The Print Decorations used to space the illustrations are not from this title.

Bookcase Archive: Claude de LAUNIES; CROISIÈRE AMOUREUSE, EO, New-York – Paris, Sous le signe du grand écart, s.d. [Paris, Maurice Duflou, vers 1937]

This Book

Rare erotic work of the 1930s, signed by a certain Claude de Launies, a pseudonym behind which Renée Dunan (1892-1936 or 1944), a pioneer of the feminine, or perhaps Johannès Gros (?-1936/37) could hide. The book was published by Maurice DUFLOU (1885-1951), who used for the occasion a fictitious cover, “Sous le signe du grand écart”. It follows the sexual adventures of a young American woman, Marjorie. It is set on the ocean liner “Normandy”, on which she embarked from New York, that she will be seduced by a stranger, before perfecting her sexual knowledge in Paris where, as she says, she intends to “learn love”. For, you imagine, to believe the books and her friends, it would only be in Paris that we know how to dress… and undress.” The clichés have a hard life… Whether or not Paris deserves its reputation as the capital of love, Marjorie will have fun in every sense of the word: sodomy, lesbianism, sadomasochism, several affairs, “tester” of lovers for a Countess, etc. Almost everything goes with delight! Pleasant curiosa, fun and well written enough for the genre.

Title Page and Limitation

CROISIÈRE AMOUREUSE, roman érotique de Claude de LAUNIES, illustré en couleurs – EO, New-York – Paris, Sous le signe du grand écart [Maurice Dulflou], New York – Paris [Paris], no date, printing [around 1937] paperback, in-8 (about 21.5 H x 15 L cm) – (3 ff.) – 151-[1] – (1 ff.) cream-coloured textured wraps titled in blue; on front cover only, over plain card covers. With 12 free compositions in colours, unsigned, 12 off-texts (approx. 16.8 H x 11.2 L cm with about 8 mm bowls; drawings of approx. 15 H x 9.5 L cm) Text decorated with 9 wood cuts in bistre / red, attributed by Dutel to Louis BERTHOMMÉ SAINT-ANDRÉ (1905-1977) 2 headings (the first repeated five times; the second, four times), 6 cul-de-lamps and 1 title sticker. 120/ 350 ex. of the current print on velin pur fil.

Condition: Cover/ shirt: a little shabby, with some smudges.. There are various small spots or freckles on the first plate, and several smudges, especially at the back head (which seems to have been  glued) and at the top right on the second plate, at the level of an old tear (about 4 cm) that has been (mischievously) restored (glued and paper inside). In addition, small slits in the head and tail of the back (about 2 cm and 1 cm). Brown traces of adhesive on the inner covers (likely adhesives of an old protection), with a slight transfer on the half title and the last page (see images) . Top slice a little dusty. Otherwise, nice overall freshness, generally clean if not a few small freckles isolated or discharges on some sheets: p. 8-10 (8 mm), 27 (gutter), 62-64 (lower corners), 70, p. 79, p. 88 – Text may be slightly affected (p. 8-10 or p. 88), but engravings are spared. Bookcase Archive :ANON; SÉDUCTION. Jeunes amours. Avec des gravures sur cuivre par un artiste célèbre. Published by Aux dépens d’un amateur, pour le profit de quelques autres, MCXXXIX (1939)

This Book

A slight diversion back into the world of clandestine publishing. This one has some familiar features around the structure of the title page and the printers motif, but I am hesitant to attribute it to a particular publisher without a little more research. Perhaps one of you knows who the guilty party was?

I have seen this one listed for sale elsewhere with 10 illustrations, and in fact Dutel sees only 10 illustrations, there are in fact 11, one being the frontispiece, as the images below will evidence.

Bookcase Archive : Matée par le Fouet: Jean Martinet, . Cover and 12 , superb engraved plates by Herric .Éditions Prima, {1930 }

Previously listed in a rebound copy, listed again here for completeness sake with  the original covers displayed. With all the illustrations, superbly executed (no pun), by Herric:- (Chéri Hérouard)

Chéri Hérouard (1881-1961) was a French artist and illustrator of numerous erotica and spanking novels. He used the pseudonym Herric when he illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches. And as evidenced by these titles also, Editions Prima.

Yet another accidental off shoot of my collecting activity, I found one of these titles and then set out to locate others, they are rather beautiful things and despite the subject matter, which even some erotic  bibliophiles disapprove of, most were not prosecuted at time of publication and only really became the subject of censorship when reprinted , mainly in the 1950’s

Books for Sale: Lady Impéria, Les Égarements d’un Asservi. No publisher. No date but Editions d’Antin (c 1936)

Another title from the “Vidal” stable of of bookshops and publishers, which was composed of,- Les éditions du Couvre-feu : éditions d’Antin, éditions du Chevet, édition Curio, éditions Georges de Cayla, éditions Idéal, éditions de Minuit, éditions Richepanse & Le Jardin d’Eros.

It appears common for Editions d’Antin titles to be issued as clandestine, some without even printer details, as this copy. The single identifying factor, is the calligraphic motif on all the covers, it could be an L or a Z or even a stylised whip? This publishers or printers mark is sometimes the only way to  link a title to an originator.

As this is not an illustrated title it is relatively easy to list, with only a little research, it is  of interest to the serious erotic bibliophile, because it is a clandestine title that does not appear to have been identified as such in the major bibliographies.  For bibliographic information see. Les éditions du couvre-feu, Christophe Bier, editions Astarte 2013.

bibliographic Information and synopsis, courtesy of Christophe Bier

I have taken the liberty of attempting to translate the synopsis from the French (Image above), Any mistakes are mine alone and I offer apologies in advance , both to Christophe and anyone taking the trouble to read this.

(The title roughly translates as ” The Errors of a Slave”)

“”The financier Robert Brot-Gillières, bearer of the Legion of Honor, gravitates around the perverse masseuses and the flogging houses. In search of new thrills, he lets himself be manhandled by two ordinary women, Mrs. Voulay and her fifteen-year-old niece. Mathilde, They understand the financial gain they can derive from him, by treating him as a slave. Changed by his masochism, the man becomes extremely unpleasant to his wife. Intrigued by this change of character, Simone, her daughter-in-law, refers to Miss Diana, a professor of physical culture who commences to initiate him into Sapphism and fantasies of flagellation. After having dismissed the two greedy battleaxes, the Professor confuses the masochist by delivering him to two masked flagellants … Simone and her mother! “Unmask” added Madame Brot-Gillières with scathing irony, “the voluptuous Robert will not need to look for sensations elsewhere: he will have his whippers at home!” “
