[1911?]. 2 Volumes,16 colour plates (unsigned).

A very rare clandestine publication from Jean Fort, something of a bibliographical mystery, and not much information out there, I am unable to locate a copy in any library, or any history of this title being auctioned. It may simply be that I do not have adequate reference material, but I am asking for any information anyone has about this title. This edition is a great rarity and even more so with a suite of 16 original illustrations. It is likely that the illustrations are “extra” to the book and may have been commissioned by the original owner, they appear contemporary with the book. Cannot establish this for certain unless another copy turns up with these illustrations.

The appears to be some surface debate about which came first, this edition provisionally dated 1911, although it is not actually dated at all, despite someone having penciled 1911 at the foot of the title page, or the clandestine Carrington  English edition dated 1910, which claims to have been translated from the French.

This French edition makes no similar claim to have been translated from the English, so given the confusion (deliberate) created by clandestine publishers, the debate about the chronology may simply be a matter of bibliographers pride.

I hope to be able to provide an update soon, in the meantime enjoy this rarity.

Récits de la Villa Brigitte. Fessées Gaillardes et Authentiques racontées par les membres du club sainte Brigitte, Bibliothèque des Deux Hémisphères [ Jean Fort ], collection Cressida, s.d. [1911?]. 2 Volumes in original neutral paper covers. Title of each volume on spine, pp 139, 155+ table. (19 x 12 cm).16 colour plates (unsigned) tipped in, each plate (excepting the first) are indexed against the appropriate volume, i.e. VB 1, VB 2, along with the page number the image is paired with. The illustrations are more explicit than the usual flagellation themes.

Chambrières de haute école – DESERGY, René-Michel & [FONTAN, Léo] Fontana (illustrations) Edité par Collection des Orties Blanches, 1934
First edition. Adorned with 16 inset engravings on black loose leaves of Fontana [Léo FONTAN]. Collection of White Nettles, 79 rue de Vaugirard, Paris, 1934. Large in-8 paperback, 14.2 x 23 cm. 272- (2) pp. Cov. on cream paper printed in red and black.

A classic, “Orties Blanches” , by one of its house authors and illustrated by one of the best designers of the genre, the artist-painter Léo Fontan (1884 1965) who was noted for drawing the covers of the first Arsène Lupine title, at Lafitte. He worked wonders in frivolous magazines like La Vie Parisienne and Fantasio. His rare incursions into, flogging literature are notable for the amusing elegance, that characterized his style. He uses a lot of humour to illustrate scenes of spankings between ladies of the world and disobedient maids. In this obsessed text, who take pleasure in the joys of flogging. They are refusals and feminine resistance and blushing, most of the time but there is also the naked rear of a cheeky florist youth too. Chapter VII is titled “The Atmosphere Hot”: it is valid for the whole book. The novel is followed by a correspondence section consisting of nine letters from readers. Two of them reveal a definite interest for the enema (with two insets by Fontan). First edition. Beautiful copy

I must admit to having posted these illustrations before, primarily because I was interested in making comparisons between this artist, Marilac and Wighead. At the time I did not have a copy of this book and Christophe Bier was kind enough to send me a set of illustrations. Now I actually have a copy am listing the volume, This title for me represents one of the very best illustrated books in the genre, I still favour Wighead, who although remaining a mystery, provided significantly more material. Marilac despite notes elsewhere claiming him as unknown, is in fact Mario Laboccetta, a respected artist in the 20’s who appears to have had a very brief foray into the world of flagellation. The only other title I am aware of by him in this genre is the cover of another Editions Prima title, Gaston Vicennes, L’Amour Fouetté, which I have previously listed and which is also linked at the bottom of this page.

Yet another departure for me, as this is an odd volume, worthy of recording here because of the rarity of the illustrations. This volume is number 3 of a 4 volume set dated 1797, but actually printed in 1865. Bound in quarter  red leather on mottled boards, 354 pages (9.5 x 14.5 cm), with a frontispiece and 10 full page illustrations by Acier. Any other information on this edition would be most welcome.

I generally do not list items which are after 1965, however I allow myself certain exceptions, specifically when any illustrations are from an earlier period, such as this small item, which has the added attaraction of text in English and using the very old fashioned device of text in the form of letters. There are links below the listing to some of the original titles, from which the illustrations in this pamphlet were copied.

UNIQUE – For Lovers of the Unusual , Small undated (1970?) booklet side stapled with illustrated cover in brown and green, (10.5 x 14 cm), inked numericals on font cover, order form inside back cover.41 pages of text, in the form of letters, 7 illustrations which are cropped versions of the illustrations from various Editions Prima publications from the 1930’s, the artist is Herric:- (Chéri Hérouard). Very Good.
