Facsimile of Original Cover

Another major player in the 1930’s flagellation market, along with Orties Blanches, were Les Editions Couvre-Feu, followed by Le Jardin d’Eros, distinctly different in that the contents and illustrations were more twisted and aimed at torture and humiliation, unlike the titles issued by Editions Prima, which always seem to have smiling faces , no matter what act of depravity is taking place, the characters in these editions seem to be taking it a bit more seriously. I have extensive listings of titles  from Vidal house imprints I will attempt to update the links to make it easier to group them. This is one of my Rescued Books. Lacking original cover and one of the illustrations both of which are present in facsimile, in this listing but physically absent from the actual book.

Books for Trade: Jim Galding; Gitanes Dominatrices ou Les Voluptes Infernales; Le Jardin d’Eros, 6 rue de Tracy Paris (2e)n.d.(1935).11of12, extraordinary illustrations in colour by an unsigned artist, who is clearly the same artist who illustrated “La Fesseuse Passionnée”, linked below . This copy rebound in sturdy practical boards. original covers not retained. 239 pp, text complete and overall condition good plus, lacking one of the illustrations, a facsimile of which is provided in the listing. Limited Edition.

The description below is by Christophe Bier, from the marvelous “Les Éditions du Couvre-Feu”, published by editions Astarte in 2013, where it can be found on page 143

Special Edition: Grégor Yvan. Chair Sanglée ou les Voluptés fetichistes, Le Jardin D’eros, rue de Tracy, Paris, s.d. (circa1935) Nombreuses illustration suggetives de Wighead.

I have waited a long time to list this, I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy from my good friends’ at Libreria Scarpignato in Rome. who agreed that the book is well travelled and worn, and indeed its boards are beaten, almost as though subjected to the kind of thrashing so artfully displayed in its contents, its front cover is taped and it is shaken , perhaps it had forgotten its safe word?  But despite all this it has survived, it has wonderful presence, it has weight and it a delight to hold, printed on heavy gloss paper, and illustrations that are out of this world. and so very rare.

Wighead is my favourite artist of this genre, I have been fortunate enough to have owned a small number of the original titles illustrated by this genius of decadent art who still remains unidentified. This listing is a first draft and I will add blow ups of some of the images a few at a time, this is for my benefit as I am sure the picture vultures will descend and claim the images as their own, and display them without context. This is a book, and in the first instance the images are displayed as they appear in the book, I have cropped some of the smaller images, which I use to act as spacers between, the pages, as anyone who reads any of my editorial commentary  will be aware, I just love a book that provides all the elements for its listing on my blog.

The challenge with presenting this title was in the illustrations which although described as red are in fact a pale pink colour,  I have had to play with the exposure setting to get the images to show up, my scans  are clearer than the originals. The illustrations are unsigned but remind me somewhat of Mahlon Blaine, any suggestions please complete a contact form.

Books for Trade: Lady Impéria, Les Égarements d’un Asservi. No publisher. No date but Editions d’Antin (c 1936)

Another title from the “Vidal” stable of of bookshops and publishers, which was composed of,- Les éditions du Couvre-feu : éditions d’Antin, éditions du Chevet, édition Curio, éditions Georges de Cayla, éditions Idéal, éditions de Minuit, éditions Richepanse & Le Jardin d’Eros.

It appears common for Editions d’Antin titles to be issued as clandestine, some without even printer details, as this copy. The single identifying factor, is the calligraphic motif on all the covers, it could be an L or a Z or even a stylised whip? This publishers or printers mark is sometimes the only way to  link a title to an originator.

As this is not an illustrated title it is relatively easy to list, with only a little research, it is  of interest to the serious erotic bibliophile, because it is a clandestine title that does not appear to have been identified as such in the major bibliographies.  For bibliographic information see. Les éditions du couvre-feu, Christophe Bier, editions Astarte 2013.

bibliographic Information and synopsis, courtesy of Christophe Bier

I have taken the liberty of attempting to translate the synopsis from the French (Image above), Any mistakes are mine alone and I offer apologies in advance , both to Christophe and anyone taking the trouble to read this.

(The title roughly translates as ” The Errors of a Slave”)

“”The financier Robert Brot-Gillières, bearer of the Legion of Honor, gravitates around the perverse masseuses and the flogging houses. In search of new thrills, he lets himself be manhandled by two ordinary women, Mrs. Voulay and her fifteen-year-old niece. Mathilde, They understand the financial gain they can derive from him, by treating him as a slave. Changed by his masochism, the man becomes extremely unpleasant to his wife. Intrigued by this change of character, Simone, her daughter-in-law, refers to Miss Diana, a professor of physical culture who commences to initiate him into Sapphism and fantasies of flagellation. After having dismissed the two greedy battleaxes, the Professor confuses the masochist by delivering him to two masked flagellants … Simone and her mother! “Unmask” added Madame Brot-Gillières with scathing irony, “the voluptuous Robert will not need to look for sensations elsewhere: he will have his whippers at home!” “

Another rare flagellation title, I am not sure whether this title was reissued by Editions Dominique Leroy in the 1970’s, as were many of the other Carlo illustrated titles, but in any case it is worth noting that the illustrations in the original editions are on papier couche, or glossy paper, as a result they are much more vibrant than the reprints where the illustrations were on ordinairy cheap paper stock. This is the original edition and I hope you like the images.

Another Fem-dom title from the Vidal empire and a very rare Editions duCouvre-Feu title despite it condition, here the old adage “find another copy” applies.
Dont know how I missed his one i’ve had it for ages, i suspect I may have been reluctant to scan it because of the fragile state of the binding, never mind done now, hope you like it.

Book has been rebound in anonymous grey card covers, the original covers are absent, binding is loose and separating and the poor old thing needs resoration and a rebind. However for our purposes it is more than good enough because the illustrations are all present.

Books for Trade: HUGUES, Clovis: ODE A VENUS. ODE AU VAGIN. Poème inédit. Domrémy, A l’Enseigne de la Pucelle, s.d. (vers 1933) [Paris, Maurice Duflou]

Yet another stunning example from the golden age of erotica, a clandestine title from Duflou, with input from Perceau. This presented scanning problems, as the book is rebound with original covers bound in, so it was not always possible to get the images flat on the scanner bed, unfortunately there is not much to be done about this.

The book is interesting on a number of counts, as yet again this is a Briffaut publication which appears to have variant editions in the same limitations, in this case my copy has colour illustrations, all other copies I have traced have the illustrations in black only, I had a similar experience with my Briffaut copy of L’Anti Justine.

The most interesting point for me however is the anonymous illustrator of this title, which I believe to be the mysterious “Wighead”, I would welcome any comments on this possibility.

And for those among you that have an interest in books rather than just images, this copy has some damp staining in the guttering, and I would welcome any information on the possibility of treating this.

HUGUES, Clovis: ODE A VENUS. ODE AU VAGIN. Poème inédit.Domrémy,

A l’Enseigne de la Pucelle, s.d. (vers 1933) [Paris, Maurice Duflou]

1 volume in-8 (22 x 16.5 cm), paperback, 69- (1) pages. 10 photo-gravures inset in colour. Cream cover printed in red and black with two initials for the letters Q and V. The cover modestly bears the title Ode to Venus while the title page clearly indicates Ode to Vagina. Rebound copy with original covers bound in.

This volume contains a note on the author signed Jean Tiretta, the facsimile of the last page of the manuscript signed Klau-Vizuq, the Ode to Vagina, a notice on the Ode to Piron Priory by Helpey (Louis Perceau) , Ode to Priapus and The Seven Beatitudes.

With regard to Clovis Hugues (1851-1907), Aristide Briand wrote: “There were in him Beranger, Camille Desmoulins and Tartarin of Tarascon”. In other words: communard, freemason, socialist, poet; it was all this in turn and at once. The Ode to the Vagina dates from 1906. One knows nothing about the illustrator of this beautiful edition out of the presses of Maurice Duflou.Reference: Dutel, Bibliography of erotic works published clandestinely in French between 1920 and 1970, no. 2078.

This is an unusually late edition for me, undated, but close to 1980, judging by other titles issued by this press. This title and its illustrations are exceedingly rare, in the original French edition, published in 1936 by Éditions Curio. I did not know that this edition existed but stumbled across it. The original illustrations were in colour and from the appearance of the ones in this edition they were taken from the colour plates , I have played with the exposure of my scans and they are an improvement over the ones in the book.

Listed here for your enjoyment with the cover illustration in colour and 6 full page illustrations in monochrome, all by the incomparable Wighead. The author Jim Galding remains unidentified.

This original title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.
