The Collection an Update:

Having suffered a stroke last year, I was forced to consider what would happen to my collection should I die. A serious enough issue, given tales of shark like dealers descending on the recently bereaved and picking off the prized items from remaining partners who have no idea of what to do with the books, and even less idea of the potential value.

This is especially true of erotica as there is an understandable embarrassment, attached to such material, especially illustrated books, and I have heard of  some such material being destroyed to avoid having to deal with it, and though this is perhaps the best disposal for modern pornography, this is less of a problem with my Paris Olympia Press collection as they are 99% without illustrations.

Having explored possible methods of disposal, I had been in negotiation with Bonhams of London with a view to the collection going to auction this June, when a combination of my own health issues and an extended family crisis prevented me from cataloguing the books, a task that Bonhams offered to cover, but I really wanted to complete myself.

So i find myself delaying the selling of the collection, and almost immediately other items turn up, within the past month or so, I have obtained a catalogue that I do not have a copy of, one of the missing Teaser magazines and a much improved copy of “The Castle of the end of Love”, a very hard to find Ophelia Press title.

I must admit to a sense of relief at still having the collection, as after so many decades of collecting the loss would be hard to take. It my be that I will reconsider next year, which gives me more time to locate the few missing items that would allow me to complete. Which also means that I will continue with this site, given that its sworn purpose is to assist with completing my Paris Olympia collection, something that is easy to forget, given that the vast majority of the books that I list are nothing to do with the Olympia Press at all.

So to give me a reason to carry on, please remember to look out for Paris Olympia material for me. And if you have any erotica (not photographic pornography please) that you want rid of then complete a contact form and I may be able to assist.

Below is an image of my Paris Olympia Press collection as of today. Coming soon recent finds and some very rare illustrated erotica.

The Story of a Bookcase: The Paris Olympia Press Collection 02/10/2018

After a long break from the blog, I am back in action more because of circumstances than by plan, but determined to make the most of my enforced idleness, I am updating material related to the collection and still seeking the few items that I do not have. Alongside this I am gathering the rare and obscure and hopefully bizzare items from around the web, to keep the semi-literate amongst you amused.

So just to remind you that the dedicated purpose of this blog is to provide access to information and images from erotica of all types, for free and to people who might not otherwise ever have sight of these books. But the primary purpose is to complete this Paris Olympia Press collection, and now that I need so few book titles, i am very keen to find the ephemera, for example catalogues, flyers, communication on headed paper, busines cards or anything associated with The Paris Olympia Press. l regularly update on new material coming into the collection, and list items that I am looking for under Books Wanted.

Here is an image of the collection in its latest state, please keep looking, If you have an item that you think might be of interest please use the contact form to get in touch.

(2) Five thousand copies were printed of this first edition, but the dustjacket wasn’t issued until some months after the book’s initial release, and was never used on subsequent reprints. A number of collectors and dealers have reported that the dustjackets are ill-fitting, suggesting that they were poorly designed. The standard bibliography of William Burroughs mentions the existence of a planned special edition, for which two sets of unbound sheets were held back. The edition was never published, but the two sets of sheets survive, one in a private collection and the other in the Burroughs Archive. (See, Joe Maynard & Barry Miles, William S. Burroughs, A Bibliography, 1953-73, Charlottsvile: University Press of Virginia, 1978, entry no. A.2a.)

New into the Collection: A List of Ophelia Press Titles and Others 1959 (Catalogue)

Another scarce and fragile item in the ephemera department, it is noticeable that this is a much more meagre offering than some of the quite elaborate and lavishly presented Paris Olympia catalogues, ironically this very simple fact makes it less likely to have survived, so a very welcome addition to the collection. Presented here in full because as part of the collection it is not available to trade or for sale, but I will copy a PDF version on request.

Any questions? please ask, just leave a comment on this blog and I will get back to you.

1956 Cover

    1956 Cover

14.4.1 1956 (August). – More Curious Books and Amusements. 18.4 x 9.1 cm. 20-page pamphlet, inclusive of wrappers illustrated with a detail from a slightly odd painting of about 1595 by an unknown artist, allegedly showing Gabrielle d’Estrée, the mistress of Henry IV of France, having her nipple tweaked by her sister. Illustrated with photos of Genet, the eyes of four of Olympia’s pseudonymous authors, Humphrey Richardson [Michel Gall], Harriet Daimler [Iris Owens], Ataullah Mardaan, who remains unknown, and Akbar del Piombo [Norman Rubington]. There are also photos by Brassaï, and some anonymous line drawings which may be the work of Norman Rubington. Included is a one-page editorial (signed The Olympia Press) on censorship, and brief promotional notes on selected Traveller’s Companion titles, and others. The inside back wrapper carries three limericks extracted from Count Palmiro Vicarion’s Book of Limericks. A price list and order form includes assorted titles of the Traveller’s Companion series from no. 7 to no. 32. In addition, a number of the earlier Olympia titles by Sade, Miller, Apollinaire, &c. are listed, together with Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Black Spring and Lady Chatterley‘s Lover and vols. 1-4 of Frank Harris’s My Life and Loves, none of which were Olympia Press titles.

Notes: (1) The translation is by Austryn Wainhouse, as revealed in a letter from Mr. Wainhouse to the compiler dated February 29th 1992. In addition to the five full-page illustrations indicated above in the collation, there are four in-text illustrations which appear on pp. 17, [25], 35, [77]. (2) A copy in the collection of Mr William Ashley is in an altered state with a black sticker over the original price indicating a price increase to NF 18. Mr Steve Mullins of London, reports a copy in an altered state with the price overstamped NF18. (3) The original edition of Le Livre blanc was published at Paris in 1928 by Maurice Sachs and Jacques Bonjean, in an edition of just twenty-one copies. No author’s name was given. Two years later, an edition with seventeen illustrations credited to Cocteau was published, but the text remained anonymous. Notes: (1) No printing details furnished in the book. (2) Pierelessandro Casavini is the pseudonym of Austryn Wainhouse; John Crombie is not a pseudonym. (3) In a letter to the present writer dated January 11th 1976, Mr. Wainhouse stated that he was involved in translating only the first five volumes of Juliette. This was later corroborated in a letter dated March 17th 1986 from John Crombie who acknowledged that contrary to what the title page has to say he was the sole translator of volume six of Juliette; Mr Wainhouse’s labours on this ambitious project concluded with volume five, and it was initially thought that the balance of the book could be contained within a single volume which Mr Crombie was commissioned to translate. However, it became apparent that two further volumes would be required to complete the enterprise, and for contractual reasons now forgotten by Mr Crombie the name of Pieralessandro Casavini was retained on the first of these. The reprint of the Olympia Press translation of Juliette published at New York by Grove Press seems to have abandoned Mr Crombie’s volumes in favour of a totally new translation by Wainhouse.

It was designed and printed by Nat Roth, who ran a printing company called Aries Press.

Notes: (1) The title page of volume I of this edition is a puzzle; it makes no mention of a volume number, nor does it indicate that it’s part of the Traveller’s Companion series. Even odder is the fact that the company’s address, as given, is for earlier premises and does not match that of volumes II and III. The notion that it is merely a reproduction of the title page of the earlier, pre-Traveller’s Companion edition of The 120 Days of Sodom published by the Olympia Press, which in general terms it resembles, is quickly dispelled by a comparison of the two, which indicates they are typographically quite different. (2) Pierressandro Casavini is the pseudonym of Austryn Wainhouse.

[Back cover, at bottom right:] Not to be sold in the U.S.A. or U.K. | Francs : 2.400.
Notes: Sexus was first published in August 1949 by Maurice Girodias for his company Les Editions du Chêne, under the revived Obelisk Press imprint that had been originally started by his father, Jack Kahane, in the early 1930’s. In December 1950, the French Minister of the Interior prohibited the book from being printed or sold in France in any language. The present edition would seem to comprise almost entirely of a re-issue of the unused sheets of a reprint published before the December ban by Les Editions du Chêne/Obelisk Press in July 1950, and printed for them on India Paper by S.O.P.A.C., 26 rue Clavel, Paris. According to the information on p. [4], the Olympia Press edition here under notice is a new printing by Imprimerie Moderne du Lion, Paris dated June 1957.However, it seems likely that Impr. Moderne du Lion’s contribution was confined to new preliminaries and wrappers.
