A Very nice copy of a pseudo-educational treatise on flagellation.

A very fragile and I suspect rare, Éditions du Couvre-Feu, title, the only reference I can find is via Bibliocuriosa, where the accreditation to Renée Dunan is to be found along with a note that this title was also published by Éditions de Lutéce in 1931, the address of that press was 33 rue Pixérécourt Paris, which is also the address of the printer of this edition.

This title is the original edition of a book I listed earlier this year, in a clandestine Losfeld edition, which is linked at the bottom of this page.This editions has the advantage of having the full set of illustrations, including the rare coloured cover title, which in this copy is tipped in, not mounted. Bibliographical information is taken from the wonderful study “Les Editions du Couvre- Feu”, introduced and edited by Christophe Bier, and published in 2013 by editions Astarte.

J.Van Styk Les Cruelles Frénésies de Van Den Rook, published by Les Editions du Couvre-Feu .n.d. [1938], 189 pages with an illustration in colour and six, full page monochrome illustrations by “Wighead”, misspelt on the title page as “Wigead”, but correct on the outer cover. The Losfeld clandestine reprint , issued as Cruelles Frénésies by J.Styka, was prosecuted in 1960, to the best of my knowledge the original was never subject to prosecution.

A very peculiar little book with woodcut “tres-libre”, illustrations, the only other book I can think of with that distinction, is the , Mahlon Blaine illustrated “Amish Love”, which I have previously listed, and is linked at the bottom of this page. That title has other similarities to this one, in that they are both produced on very odd paper which is off colour (brown) and I wonder if this was to give a rustic feel?
This title is quite fragile and the images were a challenge to scan, but I have done my best and I hope you enjoy them.

Fun text on sexual adventures caused by an advert. Dutel (II-2620) classifies this title in a group of texts “sometimes attributed to Eric Losfeld” adding that they “are of the same style in Cerise.” It has the distinction of being illustrated with woodcuts, little used technique for clandestine romances. Yet another clandestine title by the indomitable, Losfeld

In original Blue printed paper wraps, States Nimègue (1927), but is a clandestine imprint by Losfeld of 1955 No Author, No Publisher. 8vo. pp. 110. 10 illustrations, with half title and title page , a very nice print job produced in a very small number, pages with text are uncut , so an unread copy in very good near fine condition, this is an entirely clandestine imprint, illustrated in this copy with 10 full page illustrations bound in ( single illustrations to each end of the book and 4 in pairs throughout ) of an explicit nature. An item of significant interest to the serious erotic bibliophile. Dutel lists this edition as having 9 illustrations. Originally published (clandestinely), by Duringe in 1901, at that time the author Momas was using the pseudonym “TRIX”, the original edition was prosecuted in 1914.This edition was prosecuted in 1957

A return to the 1950’s and the late clandestine titles produced by the prolific Eric Losfeld, many of these titles are still available and present a reasonable, collecting opportunity, my suspicion is that many were originally unsold and were subsequently stockpiled by enterprising French dealers, who feed them out slowly into the market, prices are increasing for these titles, but you can still find copies quite regularly on eBay.

Another Maurice D’Apinac title, this one with illustrations by Topfer, a.k.a Gaston Smit, this copy is a first edition, rebound in quarter leather with author and title in gilt on the spine. The original covers are bound in. Along with the hors-texte there are numerous head and tail pieces and cul-de-lamps which makes the job of decorating the page somewhat easier. I hope you enjoy the images.

This is a significant departure from my usual illustrated titles, being a photographic title, this has come about because of my recent interest in a book published by éditions Astarté in 2013, entitled “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, which is a wonderfully illustrated bibliography of that imprint and others associated with it. Along with magnificent works illustrated by “Wighead”, and titles by the master of the bizarre “Jim Galding”, there are a range of fascinating titles mainly on the themes of flagellation and domination, and oddities like this title that are more peep-show than porn.
The brain behind the bibliographical content of “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, is Christophe Bier, who I also believe to be the originator of much of the material used to illustrate book.
I must admit to a degree of confusion over exactly which edition this is although it appears to conform to the second description below, taken from: “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”,éditions Astarté , 2013; page 156-
Additional information can be found at BiblioCuriosa, which notes the error on the dust wrapper and cover of the book which as in this copy has the word “sujestives”, replaced in subsequent editions by “suggestives”.
I am also unclear as to whether the photographs referenced in the 1933 edition as being by Roger Schall and BrassaÏ, are included in this edition, or if not who the photographer(s) were?
