Palu, S. [Isidore Isou and the Lettriste Group]. Les Étapes de l’amour. Berlin [Paris]: [1958]. First edition. 8vo, 208 pp. + [40] plates. Printed wraps.

An erotic work written under pseudonym by Isidore Isou and the Lettristes. According to Dutel, Isou didn’t have time to do the drawings for the work, so he gave the scenarios to other members of the Lettriste Group, who executed the rough, full page pornographic drawings – one of the rarest early documents of it’s kind from the Lettriste group. The place of publication, here stated as Berlin, was actually Paris – a subterfuge to avoid prosecution. The work was banned on September 21, 1960. Dutel 1514.

Monique

1950’s?

In original beige coloured card covers with title in red on cover, This is an entirely clandestine imprint, illustrated in this copy with 5 full page illustrations of an explicit nature in black. All details are a complete mystery to me, the only copies I can locate do not have the illustrations this one has 5, they are very stylized and look to be 50’s or 60s , they appear to be by the same artist who illustrated ” Le Noir sied aux blondes”, which isn’t much help as I don’t know who published that either. 5 illustrations seems like an odd number (I know it is , but you know what I mean) but I can not detect any interference with the structure of the book. And 5 is certainly better than none which appears to be the alternative.

Bookcase Archive : VERGERIE, Jean, pseud. – Histoire de Priska. Éditions de la Hippogriffe (Losfeld) [c. 1955]

No one knows today who was behind the pseudonym Jean Vergerie. He is the author of 7 works published by Editions Balland in their Collection Eglantine between 1935 and 1938. The original editions were openly published, unlike this one,  published clandestinely by Eric Losfeld in the mid-1950s. The original editions were also illustrated, and are now pretty much impossible to find. Anyone who has copies of the originals, who would like to donate images, please get in touch via a contact form.

Bibliocuriosa Collection de l’Églantine

These novels are all, without exception, erotic sado-masochistic tales of the worst or the best kind, depending on whether or not to consider Jean Vergerie as the worthy descendant of the Marquis de Sade in the twentieth century. Violence, torture, hellish machinery, monstrous, realistic or fantasized tales, everything is there to make these works the symbols of a literature apart in the production of this period.

Books for Sale: Mac Clyde, Alan, Dressage, Editions du Chinois (Eric Losfeld), 1950

A very beautiful book (no illustrations), which nicely combines my interest in early 20th century flagellation literature, and mid century clandestine publishing. This particular book , being a clandestine Losfeld title which I have never seen before, and it is a  reprint of a work first published by Librairie Générale, Paris, 1931.

Alan Mac Clyde, Edith Kindler, Joan Spanking and Jean de La Beuque fils are pseudonyms for the author of several pornographic novels published in the 1930s by the Librairie Générale (84, Boulevard Diderot, Paris) and Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne Rèunies, imprints of Paul Brenet, a publisher specializing in flagellation and BDSM works.Robert Mérodack , has suggested that behind this pseudonym is hidden Maurice Renard (1875–1939) French author of several science fiction novels among which Le Docteur Lerne, sous-dieu, Le Péril bleu and Les Mains d’Orlac.

Another clandestine title and a very odd one, the only reference I can find for this one is a brief listing of another copy as follows lists it as  ‎a numbered edition with 10 illustrations inserted, which this one also has, with a date of 1938 and referenced at Dutel 2642. It may well be that the illustrations are tipped in in other copies , but in mine they are pasted in over text, you can lift the image to read the text, but this is the first time I have found this odd practice. The illustrations are well executed and possibly controversial, I would have guessed this as a post war production, but bow to Mr Dutel’s superior knowledge. Could almost be an Isou- Losfeld or Frances Flores.

So as always if anyone can shed any more light, do complete a contact form. On which subject the first image appears to have an exposure problem (in more than one way) not my doing that is how it looks and all the images are flat scanned, with no exposure adjustment.

Bookcase Archive :Anonymous (Isidore Isou?): Les Putains ou le traite des perversions. n.p., n.d., (1950)

Another late clandestine title and something of  a mystery, the limited information I can find has an apparent link to Isidore Isou , and therefore potentially Losfeld, the only reference to an illustrated edition appears to concern prior listings of this copy, which looks to me to be extra illustrated (meaning there were not illustrations in the original book), a clue to this is that the illustrations are , except for one, double sided and by different hands. Three of the illustrations are certainly by Jean Morisot, which are evidenced by the ogre like men depicted, the others I do not know. The double sided images may originate with one of Losfeld’s productions such as ” Florilèges de la volupté ou Les Voluptés d’une vicieuse”, which is linked at the base of this post.

Its been a long time since I listed a Clandestine Losfeld, and one that I had not seen before, the artist is familiar, in that he did the illustrations for another Clandestine Losfeld – “L’ Envoutement”, which is listed elsewhere on this blog, as is another non Losfeld title by the same author Isidore Isou.

A classic clandestine production, I particularly like the reference to the book being produced in a cemetery. Quite apt for a book with such a strong anti-clerical theme.

Here we go again, having disposed of all of nearly all my Losfeld Clandestine titles it appears that I may have stumbled upon another.

If the above title has caused some confusion, allow me to clarify. The book in question has the cover as below.

Momas Fukwell_0001

But as you can see, again below, the contents differ.

Momas Fukwell_0002

The only constant factor is the name Fukwell, which is one of several pseudonyms used by Alphonse Momas, one of the most prolific pornographers of the last century.

Momas Fukwell

The actual book we are dealing with has a total of 127 pages, 110 of which appear to constitute the main text of the Fruit Verts, the remainder is entitled ” EXAMEN SUBI PAR MADEMOISELLE FLORA” which appears to be to be a poetic dialogue. this section also contains the only bound in illustration in the book.

An English translation of Petites et grandes filles, as Green Girls, was printed at Paris in 1899 by Renaudie for Duringe and Leonard Smithers. A modern reprint of this was published at New York by Grove Press in 1971.

You will note that none of the above are entitled Grandes & Petites Filles, as the first two title words are reversed in the original, in addition there is no record of an Amsterdam 1933 edition. Having raised these questions with Pat Kearney, his sage advise is thet this hotch potch is most likely a Losfeld Clandestine title, and therefore probably dates around the mid 1950’s.

Notes Towards a Bibliography
of
Alphonse Momas

Just to complicate things even more my copy has an extra 8 illustrations tipped in, a suite of six small monochrome images and 2 slightly larger illustrations in blue. I am reasonably confident that none of these belong to the book, but as I have no idea what they do belong to I am copying them here for your enjoyment.

ORPHANED ILLUSTRATIONS.
