Bookcase Archive: Chairs et Dentelles E.Klem a Portfolio of 20 images. Or in this case 5 of the 20.

Continuing my fascination with this artist, I purchased this incomplete set last year on e-bay, happy to do so for the wonderful original lithographs, but also because of the original case for them, which I hoped might contain some evidence of the publisher, alas this was not so. The seller had dated them around 1940, which is too late.

Given the subject matter I suspect that this is work for the Diana Slip lingerie range which places it from between 1933-1938. The publisher may well be one of the Vidal group, but this portfolio does not appear within the bibliography. The artist was producing erotic work for Editions d’Antin, and Diana Slip is named as the author of “Princesse Cravache”, also illustrated by this artist and published by d’Antin.

Eugene Klementieff, was a famous artist/ designer, illustrator who used the signature, E.Klem, or just E.K, or sometimes no signature for his erotic works, however his style is so distinctive that it is not usually too hard to identify his work.

So to the images, sadly only 5 of the 20 called for, they are not uncommon on the web, but are often only reproduced in black and white, therefore I hope you enjoy them in their glorious colour versions. If anyone has images of the other lithographs in the set (colour), I would be very happy to add them to this listing.

Bookcase Archive : My Most Beautiful Nights of Love: by Mademoiselle Suzy Paris 1938.

My favourite kind of book , a mystery title, I say this because although claimed as an Editions D’antin title in “Les Editions du Couvre-Feu”by Chrotphe Bier, (Editions Astarte  2014). The book itself appears only to credit Editions D’Antin as the printer rather than the publisher. This is further complicated by the short list of other books “Sold in the Library” (detail below), which lists titles published by The Obelisk Press and Librarie Astra as well as English versions of Vidal House titles. This can be explained as the lists literally being of titles sold by certain retail outlets rather than being published by them.

Cover of the French Language Edition

My Most beautiful Nights 1938_0010

The other part of the mystery is the artist behind the illustrations, although unsigned they of outstanding quality and i am tempted to compare them to the work of E.Klem, and having compared them to illustrations from other titled Odeurs du Femmes I am now convinced these are unsigned KLEM , illustrations. In an e-mail communication earlier today Christophe Bier, came to the same conclusion.

And now to the book

Bookcase Archives: Another Bibliographical Mystery: FUKWEL (Alphonse Momas) (NOT) Grandes & Petites Filles (ACTUALLY) FRUIT VERTS. Amsterdam 1933 (Paris?) (Losfeld?)

Here we go again, having disposed of all of nearly all my Losfeld Clandestine titles it appears that I may have stumbled upon another.

If the above title has caused some confusion, allow me to clarify. The book in question has the cover as below.

Momas Fukwell_0001

But as you can see, again below, the contents differ.

Momas Fukwell_0002

The only constant factor is the name Fukwell, which is one of several pseudonyms used by Alphonse Momas, one of the most prolific pornographers of the last century.

Momas Fukwell

The actual book we are dealing with has a total of 127 pages, 110 of which appear to constitute the main text of the Fruit Verts, the remainder is entitled ” EXAMEN SUBI PAR MADEMOISELLE FLORA” which appears to be to be a poetic dialogue. this section also contains the only bound in illustration in the book.

My good friend Pat Kearney lists various editions of both of the titles:

Fruits verts, par Fuckwell. Paris-Bruxelles [Paris: printed by Chas. Renaudie for Duringe], 1902. 8vo. Two volumes, pp. [iv]+134, [iv]+129. British Library: P.C.15.aa.35.

Fruits verts, par Fuckwell. Paris-Bruxelles, 1902. 8vo. Two volumes, pp. 268.

Fruits verts, par Fuckwell. Paris-Bruxelles [c. 1920]. 8vo. pp. 244.

Fruits verts, par Fukwell [sic]. [c. 1920] 8vo.

Petites et grandes filles, par Le Nismois. 8vo.

Cited in a clandestine catalogue, and probably published at Amsterdam by Auguste Brancart about 1891.

Petites et grandes filles, par Fuckwell. Londres-Paris [Rotterdam: Bergé, c. 1893.] 8vo. pp. 248. British Library: P.C.15.aa.34.

Petites et grandes filles, par Fukwell. Paris-Londres [Paris, c. 1924]. 8vo. pp. 216.

Petites et grandes filles. [Paris:] En Souvenir d’Isidore Liseux, 1924 [Eric Losfeld, c. 1955]. 8vo. pp. 137.

[Petites et grandes filles] Pot Pourri, [par] J. Le Nismois. Paris: Editions de Poèle, Square du Champs de Mars, 1949 [Eric Losfeld, c. 1955]. 8vo. 66 ff.

An English translation of Petites et grandes filles, as Green Girls, was printed at Paris in 1899 by Renaudie for Duringe and Leonard Smithers. A modern reprint of this was published at New York by Grove Press in 1971.

You will note that none of the above are entitled Grandes & Petites Filles, as the first two title words are reversed in the original, in addition there is no record of an Amsterdam 1933 edition. Having raised these questions with Pat Kearney, his sage advise is thet this hotch potch is most likely a Losfeld Clandestine title, and therefore probably dates around the mid 1950’s.

For more details and other titles by this author please follow this link to Pat Kearneys page:-

Notes Towards a Bibliography
of
Alphonse Momas

Just to complicate things even more my copy has an extra 8 illustrations tipped in, a suite of six small monochrome images and 2 slightly larger illustrations in blue. I am reasonably confident that none of these belong to the book, but as I have no idea what they do belong to I am copying them here for your enjoyment.

Bookcase Archive: Mirabeau: Le Rideau Levé ou L’Éducation de Laure. Editions de La Plume 1953

Strikingly similar to the clandestine edition published by Losfeld in 1950, this is a more elaborately decorated , openly published edition, it has the same illustration set as the Losfeld, they differ only that there are fewer only 8 in this edition, they are also slightly enlarged and in red as opposed to blue.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.

Aretin_0004

A late clandestine production of the famous Sonnets by Pietro Arentino. Rather an odd thing, oblong shape and in sheets with the illustrations tipped in, the text portion is printed on Papier d’Auvergne a la Cuve. and has some foxing pages are not numbered, there is a frontispiece (shown above) a 5 page introduction about “Aretin”, and the 16 sonnets. Unfortunately there are only 15 plates, so one missing, but a fun thing to share anyway. If anyone has a copy of the missing illustration perhaps they might like to contribute a copy to complete the listing.

Books for Trade: Anon; Caresses…or The Intimate Memoires of Jacqueline R. n.p. n.d ( Editions d’Antin? 1937?)

This one potentially is only of interest to me as it has no illustrations, but does belong within the Vidal group, of editions Couvre-Feu at al. Although this title has no publisher, printer or date details, and therefore is effectively a clandestine edition. The French version appears to be one of the more common titles from this publisher, but this the English edition appears quite rare.

This copy has the page preceding the title page cut out, the half title is present, and the person I purchased it from speculated that it might have been an illustration, but as there is no reference to any frontispiece in the French edition I doubt that this is the case. It could of course been the publishers detail and a decision was taken to excise it. If anyone else has a copy of this edition I would be curious to know what the missing page contains.

The bibliographical information below is from “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, published by éditions Astarté ,2013 where it can be found on page 150.

Appears to be a rather well written story of lesbian sexual encounters, and may well have been anonymised, because of its explicit content.

Post Update: Anon;Florilèges de la volupté ou Les Voluptés d’une vicieuse.1955 Losfeld

In my recent post regarding this title I complained, about the quality of the images in the book, and the attendant difficulties with scanning and improving the images. I asked if anyone knew who the illustrators were. And for once I actually got a response, for the moment I will just list copies of some the colour illustrations that were copied to illustrate the book. At a late date I will update the original listing with the names of the illustrators that have been identified, by a fellow bibliophile who provided the images below and who wishes to remain nameless.

This one previously unlisted, because it is shaped like a small house brick and very difficult to scan, plus I don’t like the images. But it is a clandestine title and it is going to auction, so I best list it while I still have it,I have  never seen another copy. I strongly suspect that the illustrations are copied from a much earlier edition. Ancient pornography with a very strong anti-clerical theme.
