New into the Collection: Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov. Olympia Press 1955 (First edition)

Something of a triumph this, purchased on eBay at a very good price and a much better copy than many listed on book sites a twice the price and more. An interesting point with this two volume set, is the second state status, it has because of the price increase stickers, which are actually easily removed, but I rather like them, and have never seen a copy with the stickers on before, presumably because book-dealers tend to remove them. The over price sticker only indicates that the books were not sold until after 1961, when the Franc was revalued. Also the stickers are a much preferable effect than the alternative which is either a  ink stamped over price, or even the price being completely obliterated.

As a New into the Collection title, these books are not available for sale or trade.

Notes: (1) Suppressed on December 10th, 1956 under the decree of May 1939 (article 14 of the law of July 29th 1881 sur la liberté de la presse), designed to combat politically and morally offensive périodiques et ouvrages de provenance étrangère. (2) Prosecuted on July 11th. 1958 under article 14 of a law passed on 16th July 1949 concerning the manner in which books, periodicals, &c. of an erotic character, could be sold, displayed and advertised. (3) This is the true first edition. It appeared in the distinctive green wrappers of the Traveller’s Companion Series, but not numbered and lacks any indication of being part of a series. Hence it is treated here as a general Olympia Press publication and not part of the TCS. See 7.66. (4) A handsome facsimile reprint of the first edition of Lolita was published in 1983 by the First Edition Library, Shelton, Connecticut, by arrangement with Alfred Knopf. It was issued in clamshell box covered in undressed buckram, with green leather labels blocked in gilt. The reprint was one of three that were done of scandalous modern works, the others being Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer and James Joyce’s Ulysses.

New into the Collection: The Naked Beast at Heavens Gate: Pierre Angelique [Georges Bataille], The Olympia Press 1956

A very elusive title, years ago it used to be its sister volume “A Tale of Satisfied Desire”, that was the harder to find, now there are several copies of that title and none of this one. Hence the decision to procure it despite having the flaw of the previous owner having stamped it on multiple pages.

As a New into the Collection title this book is not available for sale or trade.

Notes: A translation, by Austryn Wainhouse, of Georges Bataille’s Madame Edwarda, a work first published in 1941 by Robert Godet with the false impress Editions de Solitaire, 1937. According to an Olympia Press catalogue issued in late 1955, The Naked Beast at Heaven‘s Gate was to have been published in an edition of just 500 copies, with the limitation as follows: ten copies lettered A – J (35,000 Francs). Forty copies, numbered I – XL (17,500 Francs).  450 copies, numbered 1 – 450. The ten lettered and forty numbered copies were to have been illustrated with etchings by Hans Bellmer. In a letter to the present author dated January 8th 1979, M. Girodias succinctly explained his reasons for abandoning this very limited edition in favour of the 1200 Franc trade edition, as described above: …I felt that there was no market for it. Hans Bellmerřs engravings were too sophisticated for the U.S. 6th Fleet. In letters to the present writer (dated January 11th 1976 and December 8th 1995), Mr. Wainhouse says that the choice of the English title for this work was decided by Girodias to prevent the authorities from making any connection between the English text and the French original. Mr. Wainhouse writes: Girodias did not want to call the English versions of Histoire de l‘oeil and Madame Edwarda by any title that would prompt the police, whom he thought of as blind fools, to notice their connection with the French texts. So it had to be anything but Madame Edwarda; and what Girodias and I came up with was indeed anything but.  Mr. Wainhouse adds: At about the same period [as these books were published, Girodias] refused to consider publishing an English version of [Bataille’s] Le Mort.

Books for Trade: Ophelia Press Paris. A short list of duplicate titles.

With a number of new items coming into the collection, it is time to list the rest of my Olympia Press duplicates, and remind everyone of all the others already listed, Over the 4 month lifetime of this blog it has become fairly obvious that there is little interest in the Olympia Press titles, primarily I suspect because they lack illustrations, however given that the stated purpose of the site is to assist in completing my collection of Paris Olympia Press titles, I shall get back on task occasionally.  And so to that end I am featuring a very short list of Paris Ophelia Press imprints, you will sometimes see these titles listed by dealers as competitors to the Paris Olympia Press, when they are in fact a sub series.Sometimes noted as the poor relative of the Traveller’s Companion Series, if they have a common theme, it is that flagellation features strongly in nearly all in this series, my own collection of these titles is complete, barring the elusive “Springtime in Paris” linked at the bottom of this page.

During the mid- to late 50s and early 60s a large number of English-language pornographic novels under various imprints unrelated to the Olympia Press emanated from these addresses, and as will be seen from the Introduction, The Castle of the End of Love, the chronologically unofficial first Ophelia Press volume, was printed by Durocher.

Books for Trade:LA FLAGELLATION A TRAVERS LE MONDE: Jean de Villiot. La Tradition de la Garde. Charles Carrington. PARIS 1907

La Tradition de la Garde_0010

Unusual for me, but this time not a clandestine publication, rather an openly published title on the theme of flagellation, such titles were seldom if ever banned and although produced by the premier pornographer  Charles Carrington, the print and publication details of these books did not require concealment. Carrington produced huge numbers of very expensive books, ranging from reprints of classic “Galants” to pseudo scientific sex books and pseudo historical and even the works of Oscar Wilde. Most of Carrington’s openly published titles were lavish productions on expensive paper and in limited editions, such as the title here, which is rather wonderfully illustrated by Leon Roze. It has the added luxury of supplying all of its own decorations for my listing.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.

Books for Trade: SOCIAL STUDIES OF THE CENTURY: FLOSSIE, a Venus of Fifteen, By One who new this Charming Goddess and Worshipped at her Shrine (With Five Illustrations) Printed for the Erotica Biblion Society of London and New York. No Date ( c. 1930’s)

Flossie_0007

One of the most frequently reissued erotica titles, Mendes (Clandestine Erotic fiction in English 1800-1930) Lists 8 editions between 1897 and the 1930’s, this edition does not appear to be any of them, as I cannot locate any reference to the illustrations, that this edition contains and quite strikingly so as they are well executed and printed in red. But I do expect that this is also a 1930’s edition.
