[Front cover; within a frame of two borders, the outer consisting of fine linked chain of type device in black, and the inner a thin band of white edged in black:] JOCK CARROLL | BOTTOMS | UP | no 86 | THE |TRAVEL-LERS COMPANION | SERIES. [Spine; within a white, black-edged panel, the series no. in horizontal digits at bottom and title lettered vertically up spine:] 86 [-] BOTTOMS UP. [Back cover, at bottom right-hand corner:] 15 N.F. | NOT TO BE SOLD | IN U.S.A. & U.K.. Notes: (1) A copy in an altered state is known with a rubber-stamped price increase: within a dark blue oblong frame: NEW PRICE | NF 18. Below the frame and equal to its width are two horizontal dark blue lines. (2) There is in Angus Carrollřs collection a copy of Bottoms Up that can reasonably be described as the first printing in second issue wrappers. In all respects it is internally the same as the edition described above. However, the inner border on the front cover is not edged in black as in the case of 5.86.1, and a price increase to NF 18 is printed on the back cover (not over-stamped). What may have happened is that Girodias had his usual number of copies run off, but only bound up a percentage of them for sale. Later, when these were exhausted, he had the remaining sheets bound in new wrappers, with an increase of price. The lack of the black edging to the border was probably a printer’s error. (3) The following information was provided by Angus Carroll, the son of the author: The heroine of Bottoms Up, Gloria Heaven, was based on Marilyn Monroe. Carroll, a photojournalist, had met Monroe on the set of the movie Niagara in 1952. Unable to get the book published in Canada or the US, Carroll turned to Girodias as a last resort. Unlike most North American publishers who thought it had too much sex in it, Girodias didnřt think it had enough. He asked Carroll to spice it up, which he did. In 1964, the book was re-released by Stein & Day in New York as The Shy Photographer. Falling for Marilyn, a book of photographs Carroll took of Monroe in 1952, appeared posthumously in 1996.
