Florileges de la Volupte Losfeld_0065

Another clandestine Losfeld title this one is loaded with illustrations, as is sometimes the case the quality of the images in the book  is variable and I take some considerable time attempting to enhance and improve the images, of the 61 hors-texte images there are a number that I cannot post, so you will have to do with what I have been able to resolve. This title will be going to auction soon, so if you want to see the rest of the images you could always bid on it.

Notes: (1) Altered states have been seen on which the price has been covered with an adhesive label bearing a price increase: NEW PRICE | NF 18. An intermediate altered state is also known with a rubber-stamped price increase to NF 15. (2) The introductory note argues weakly that this novel is the work of Oscar Wilde; the circumstances of its circulation at London in manuscript in the early 1890’s suggest that Wilde may well have known of the novel, and made additions or corrections to it, but to assume that he was solely responsible for its composition is far from certain. (3) Suppressed on May 14th, 1959 under the decree of May 1939 (article 14 of the law of July 29th 1881 sur la liberté de la presse), designed to combat politically and morally offensive périodiques et ouvrages de provenance étrangère. (4) Teleny was originally published in 1893 in two volumes, printed by H.S. Nichols for Leonard Smithers. In the original MS. the setting of the novel was London, but for reasons that seem weak considering the clandestine nature of the printed edition, Smithers relocated the novel to Paris. All subsequent English editions, save one, stem from this version. In 1934, a French translation was published based on the original MS. so that the action returned to London, its proper place. Using this French text as a model, Winston Leyland prepared something closely approximating a definitive English version, which was published by Gay Sunshine Press in San Francisco in 1984.

[Back cover, at bottom right-hand corner:] Francs : 1.500. Notes: (1) An altered state is known with a rubber stamped price increase to NF 18 on the back wrapper, overprinting the original, printed price. (2) In his notes accompanying the extract from The Gaudy Image included in The Olympia Reader (New York: Grove Press, 1965, p. 405), Maurice Girodias indicates that William Talsman is a pseudonym. A slim volume of verse called Notes from the Underworld by William Talsman was published at New York by William-Frederick Press in 1961. It was copyrighted in the name of James M. Smith. An Olympia Press catalogue of the period indicates that this volume number of the Traveller’s Companion series was to have been a novel called The Porridge Tasters by Henry Crannach [Marilyn Meeske], but although completed it was never published because, presumably, Girodias felt it to be insufficiently erotic.

This translation has been revised and corrected by Pandit Sitaram Anand, who closely followed the earlier notes of Pandit Bhugwantlal Indraji, and Shivram Parshuram Bhide. This is guaranteed a complete and unexpurgated version of the Kama Sutra of Vatsayana.  Indore, 1957. The translators‘ note, from p. [14]. The copy examined has suffered a printers blunder; the border of type ornament on the title page appears to have been printed upside down, so that the break in it that is usually occupied by the publishers address at the bottom of the page is, in this copy, at the top of the page. William Ashley reports that the copy in his collection is the same in this respect.

1956 Cover

    1956 Cover

14.4.1 1956 (August). – More Curious Books and Amusements. 18.4 x 9.1 cm. 20-page pamphlet, inclusive of wrappers illustrated with a detail from a slightly odd painting of about 1595 by an unknown artist, allegedly showing Gabrielle d’Estrée, the mistress of Henry IV of France, having her nipple tweaked by her sister. Illustrated with photos of Genet, the eyes of four of Olympia’s pseudonymous authors, Humphrey Richardson [Michel Gall], Harriet Daimler [Iris Owens], Ataullah Mardaan, who remains unknown, and Akbar del Piombo [Norman Rubington]. There are also photos by Brassaï, and some anonymous line drawings which may be the work of Norman Rubington. Included is a one-page editorial (signed The Olympia Press) on censorship, and brief promotional notes on selected Traveller’s Companion titles, and others. The inside back wrapper carries three limericks extracted from Count Palmiro Vicarion’s Book of Limericks. A price list and order form includes assorted titles of the Traveller’s Companion series from no. 7 to no. 32. In addition, a number of the earlier Olympia titles by Sade, Miller, Apollinaire, &c. are listed, together with Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Black Spring and Lady Chatterley‘s Lover and vols. 1-4 of Frank Harris’s My Life and Loves, none of which were Olympia Press titles.

Notes: (1) The translation is by Austryn Wainhouse, as revealed in a letter from Mr. Wainhouse to the compiler dated February 29th 1992. In addition to the five full-page illustrations indicated above in the collation, there are four in-text illustrations which appear on pp. 17, [25], 35, [77]. (2) A copy in the collection of Mr William Ashley is in an altered state with a black sticker over the original price indicating a price increase to NF 18. Mr Steve Mullins of London, reports a copy in an altered state with the price overstamped NF18. (3) The original edition of Le Livre blanc was published at Paris in 1928 by Maurice Sachs and Jacques Bonjean, in an edition of just twenty-one copies. No author’s name was given. Two years later, an edition with seventeen illustrations credited to Cocteau was published, but the text remained anonymous. (4) Suppressed on May 14th, 1959 under the decree of May 1939 (article 14 of the law of July 29th 1881 sur la liberté de la presse), designed to combat politically and morally offensive périodiques et ouvrages de provenance étrangère.

Notes: (1) No printing details furnished in the book. (2) Pierelessandro Casavini is the pseudonym of Austryn Wainhouse; John Crombie is not a pseudonym. (3) In a letter to the present writer dated January 11th 1976, Mr. Wainhouse stated that he was involved in translating only the first five volumes of Juliette. This was later corroborated in a letter dated March 17th 1986 from John Crombie who acknowledged that contrary to what the title page has to say he was the sole translator of volume six of Juliette; Mr Wainhouse’s labours on this ambitious project concluded with volume five, and it was initially thought that the balance of the book could be contained within a single volume which Mr Crombie was commissioned to translate. However, it became apparent that two further volumes would be required to complete the enterprise, and for contractual reasons now forgotten by Mr Crombie the name of Pieralessandro Casavini was retained on the first of these. The reprint of the Olympia Press translation of Juliette published at New York by Grove Press seems to have abandoned Mr Crombie’s volumes in favour of a totally new translation by Wainhouse.

Traveller’s Companion Series List 5

Books for Trade: Special Edition, L’Anti-Justine ou les delices de l’amour. Nouvelle edition entierement revue et corrigee, etablie pour la premiere fois sur le texte original de 1798. Precede d’une notice bibliographique par Helpey [d. i. L. Perceau.]

The Anti-Justine is a pornographic novelization of Restif de la Bretonne’s own life and sexual debauches, which the author tried to defend “morally” by declaring his book to be an “antidote” to the supposed poison of de Sade; yet the book is a monumental odyssey of sexual depravity that often rivals de Sade in its relentless explicitness.

This copy is 135/350, rather curiously some books in the same limitation do not have the plates coloured. In this copy the engravings are hand coloured and rather beautifully so, the artist signs himself Le Loup, and to the best of my knowledge remains unidentified.

This book is available to trade against any of my Paris Olympia Press wants, as listed in Books Wanted on this site.

The publisher was something of a character to say the least, and  here I borrow from Patrick Kearneys Scissors and Paste web site:-

Together with René Bonnel, Maurice Duflou was one of the more important erotica publishers in Paris between the two World Wars, but unlike Bonnel he tended to avoid the more avant-garde extremes of the genre, concentrating for the most part on reprints and only the occasional original work. Duflou’s longtime association with Louis Perceau–similar to Bonnel’s with Pascal Pia–produced a number of fine new editions of important eighteenth century works, and several of Perceau’s own compositions and editorial endeavors, including Le Keepsake Galant, a fascinating anthology of shorter erotic pieces, which was by Perceau’s own admission “…l’un des curieux de ceux qu’on publiées sous le manteau au XXe siècle…”. (See Perceau, 327-1.)

In addition to being a publisher, Duflou was also a printer, and there is evidence to suggest that he may have printed books for others. School Life in Paris (‘Privately Printed, 1923’) for example is pointedly described by Pia (2nd ed., p. 684) as being merely printed by Duflou, whereas all the other Duflou titles noted by Pia are French and stated to have been both printed and published by him. This suggests that Duflou’s work as a printer for others may have been limited to cheaply produced English works ‘for the trade’ rather than the finely printed works he did in partnership with Perceau and others.
