Books for Trade: Vincennes, Gaston. L’Amour fouetté. Orné de douze illustrations hors-texte par Ch. Avalanche. Paris, Editions Prima,[vers1930?] . Couverture par Marilac

I have now opted to list this title with all the illustrations in an attempt to solve the mystery of the artist of the 12 plates, having already established, following conversation with Thanalie of Biblio Curiosa :- the cover for L’Amour Fouetté is signed Marilac, a pseudonym of the Italian illustrator Mario Laboccetta who worked in Paris in the 1920-30s  ,it is unlikely to be Marilac who is responsible for the other illustrations, I am tempted to think that the mysterious Ch. Avalanche might well be Wighead , although the images in this title are more spartan than Wighead’s normal work they do have similarity in form and style. You disagree? , well tell me about it by leaving a comment.

For your viewing and hopefully some information, the covers, Title page and 12 extraordinary Deco illustrations.

NOTE: If you are downloading /saving ,the images that is fine with me, however if you are using them elsewhere please have the courtesy to credit this site.

This Title is available to trade against any of my Paris Olympia Press wants.

Clandestine Losfeld Part 2

Candestine Losfeld List 1

Books for Trade: L’Arétin français, par un Membre de l’Académie des Dames 1803

A very scarce and fragile item and some confusion about which of a number of possible clandestine editions this actually is, here follows some communication between myself and Patrick Kearney from earlier today:-

Good Morning Pat

L’Aretin has arrived and not at all what I expected, it is tiny and quite fragile, the frontis and another plate is detached, and the plates are all at the front of the book with a description of each on the facing page, I initially thought that there was a missing illustration only to find that at huitieme there are 3 illustrations gathered together, the verso of description and illustrations are all blank. The Pagination only begins with Les Epices de Venus ou Pieces Diverses in which there are 56 numbered pages. Which might well explain the difference in pagination with the Dutel.
As already stated the little gem is very fragile, but I will try to scan it all if I can without buggering it up completely and then drop box it for you to see, you are much more able to make sense of it than I am, if of course you have time.

Steve, Hi:

Got the L’Aretin, and I have to say it’s a pretty little item and
one that still defies identification. There are three dated ‘1803’
but they all have differences which tend to distinguish them
from being the same as the little delight you’ve picked up.

The date seems right, or at least it’s in a close ballpark. Your
scanning is excellent, BTW, and I love the phallic frontis.

Pat ,Sorry my friend

Opening ones eyes helps, I note looking at the images that they all have their number above the top right hand border, they all appear to be present but two different images are both numbered 8, and are two thirds of the trio grouped together along with 9 the description of which stands facing a blank on the following page.

 Steve, Hi:

The pagination, I notice, appears only on the “Epices de Venus” — pp. [1]-56.
The first part is unpaginated, and so I’m thinking seriously that what you’ve
got is an exemplar of Dutel A-104 after all. He describes it as: “2 parties en
1 vol. in-12 (12.8 x 8.2 [centimetres one surmises]) de (23 ff.) et 56 pp.” He
also concurs on the date (1803), and that the plates are a “reproduction
de celles Borel-Elluin” from the edition of 1787. The texts are by Felix Nogaret.

If the size matches what you have, then I would say that you could describe
it as being Dutel A-104.

I’ve compared the plates to those in the original edition (as printed in “Ars
Erotica,” vol.1) and they seem to be reversed and are fairly crudely
reproduced. The original 1787 engravings are marvellous, and were not
coloured.

Best wishes

Pat

Well the above is included to illustrate the type of communication that goes on around clandestinely published erotica, especially when it is something as old and marginal as this. Despite Mr Kearney’s reservations on the matter of artistic rendering, I am absolutely charmed with this little book, and would welcome any further information or alternative view on the edition. So here for your enjoyment are the highlights of the item in question, being the title pages, frontispiece and 19 coloured plates of :

My apologies for the quality of the Jpeg scans, but because of the fragility of the book I could not flatten out the pages.

Anyone who is seriously interested in assisting with resolving the matter of which edition this is please leave a comment on this blog and I will send on request a PDF of the entire book, you will need DropBox or some such facility as the file size is too large to email.

Books for Trade: Special Edition, L’Anti-Justine ou les delices de l’amour. Nouvelle edition entierement revue et corrigee, etablie pour la premiere fois sur le texte original de 1798. Precede d’une notice bibliographique par Helpey [d. i. L. Perceau.]

The Anti-Justine is a pornographic novelization of Restif de la Bretonne’s own life and sexual debauches, which the author tried to defend “morally” by declaring his book to be an “antidote” to the supposed poison of de Sade; yet the book is a monumental odyssey of sexual depravity that often rivals de Sade in its relentless explicitness.

This copy is 135/350, rather curiously some books in the same limitation do not have the plates coloured. In this copy the engravings are hand coloured and rather beautifully so, the artist signs himself Le Loup, and to the best of my knowledge remains unidentified.

This book is available to trade against any of my Paris Olympia Press wants, as listed in Books Wanted on this site.

The publisher was something of a character to say the least, and  here I borrow from Patrick Kearneys Scissors and Paste web site:-

Together with René Bonnel, Maurice Duflou was one of the more important erotica publishers in Paris between the two World Wars, but unlike Bonnel he tended to avoid the more avant-garde extremes of the genre, concentrating for the most part on reprints and only the occasional original work. Duflou’s longtime association with Louis Perceau–similar to Bonnel’s with Pascal Pia–produced a number of fine new editions of important eighteenth century works, and several of Perceau’s own compositions and editorial endeavors, including Le Keepsake Galant, a fascinating anthology of shorter erotic pieces, which was by Perceau’s own admission “…l’un des curieux de ceux qu’on publiées sous le manteau au XXe siècle…”. (See Perceau, 327-1.)

In addition to being a publisher, Duflou was also a printer, and there is evidence to suggest that he may have printed books for others. School Life in Paris (‘Privately Printed, 1923’) for example is pointedly described by Pia (2nd ed., p. 684) as being merely printed by Duflou, whereas all the other Duflou titles noted by Pia are French and stated to have been both printed and published by him. This suggests that Duflou’s work as a printer for others may have been limited to cheaply produced English works ‘for the trade’ rather than the finely printed works he did in partnership with Perceau and others.

 Les Étapes de l’amour

S.Palu

Berlin [Paris]

(1958)

Palu, S. [Isidore Isou and the Lettriste Group]. Les Étapes de l’amour. Berlin [Paris]: [1958]. First edition. 8vo, 208 pp. + [40] plates. Printed wraps.

An erotic work written under pseudonym by Isidore Isou and the Lettristes. According to Dutel, Isou didn’t have time to do the drawings for the work, so he gave the scenarios to other members of the Lettriste Group, who executed the rough, full page pornographic drawings – one of the rarest early documents of it’s kind from the Lettriste group. The place of publication, here stated as Berlin, was actually Paris – a subterfuge to avoid prosecution. The work was banned on September 21, 1960. Dutel 1514.

1950’s?

In original beige coloured card covers with title in red on cover, This is an entirely clandestine imprint, illustrated in this copy with 5 full page illustrations of an explicit nature in black. All details are a complete mystery to me, the only copies I can locate do not have the illustrations this one has 5, they are very stylized and look to be 50’s or 60s , they appear to be by the same artist who illustrated ” Le Noir sied aux blondes”, which isn’t much help as I don’t know who published that either. 5 illustrations seems like an odd number (I know it is , but you know what I mean) but I can not detect any interference with the structure of the book. And 5 is certainly better than none which appears to be the alternative.

Books For Trade: Special Edition: Editions Prima. Paris 1930’s. Flagellation (Spanking) Novels Illustrated by “Herric” and another?

Chéri Hérouard (1881-1961) was a French artist and illustrator of numerous erotica and spanking novels. He used the pseudonym Herric when he illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches. And as evidenced by these titles also, Editions Prima.

Yet another accidental off shoot of my collecting activity, I found one of these titles and then set out to locate others, they are rather beautiful things and despite the subject matter, which even some erotic  bibliophiles disapprove of, most were not prosecuted at time of publication and only really became the subject of censorship when reprinted , mainly in the 1950’s

The limited information that I have on these titles comes mainly from descriptions and dating from the Biblio Curiosa web site, or from auction catalogue listings, as always the titles you see here are the real thing and in my private collection, and as such available for trade for items I am seeking for my Paris Olympia Press collection, I must state now that it would take something pretty persuasive for me to part with any of these.

I am keen to find a definitive list of the titles produced by this publisher, I understand from browsing the web that they were quite prolific, however my primary interest is censorship and books that were prosecuted and banned,so any information would be most welcome.

Artist is credited as CH.Avalanche, no idea who that is but pretty sure its not Chéri Hérouard, although the initials lead to that conclusionWhen I first acquired this title I had trouble getting my head around this cover and that time, it had much more of a sixties feel to it, but it is 1930 or thereabouts and a wonderful and exceedingly rare example. My apologies for the paucity of information but that is what you are there for, fill in the gaps in my knowledge please. Detailed description of condition and other images on request.

The Story of a Bookcase: The Obsession Begins

Although it is difficult for me to recall the exact year, I do remember the day, as it was my birthday, and from my closest friend I received a copy of the Olympia Reader, this was either 1983 or 1984, this book fascinated me, not so much the excerpts from the Olympia titles but the story behind the press and the range of outrageous, weird and wonderful stuff it had put out.

10010-500x500

Fairly quickly, I started to look for titles in local bookshops and charities, it did not take long to discover that these books were hard to find, and in the mid eighties no one in the book world was much interested in them, with a little research, of the old fashioned kind, (not a huge amount of WWW activity in those days), I found a copy of Pat Kearney’s Olympia Hand-list which at least informed me just how many of these books I could look for.

It also introduced me to the fact that there was at least one person as crazy as me already on the job, although with a very significant head start. As it became clear very quickly finding any of these books in your standard second hand bookshop was pretty much a non starter, as a consequences in the early days at least, I used to hunt, often with my good friend, the one who gave me the Olympia Reader, and as he pops up quite a lot in future adventures in book hunting I shall call him “T”. Commencing with local charities and gradually spreading our net further afield, we explored towns and villages looking for any shop, market or other location that might have second hand books, also going to Jumble sails and Flea Markets, lots of time spent wandering around with no specific address to aim for. Around this time I found and purchased a copy of Driffs Guide, this was an amazing, personalised directory to the second hand bookshops of England Published by Driff Field, an eccentric book runner of some notoriety, I recall bumping into him on many occasions, often in Any Amount of Books in the Charing Cross Road, where he appeared to have some kind of residency, if my memory serves me well, I cannot remember Driff wearing anything other than a white colonial suit and fedora in summer, with his sole means of transport a bicycle, for more on this character search Driffs Guide on Google.

Eventually my hunting took me back to Herne Bay, where effectively this journey began, when as a boy , as previously told in these pages, I went on bicycle to hunt for Marvel Comics, so in the 80’s I found myself back in the same shop where I used to buy my comics, admittedly in a slightly different location but run by the same owner, who was happy to talk about second hand comics , but became very elusive about Olympia Press books, or Readers as he called them. It soon became obvious that there was some sort of coded way of gaining access to these books and that it would take time, although there was no justification for such caution in the 80’s, the DB shop owner was firmly embedded in the past and would not easily open up based on a single visit, but more of this later. It was on my first return visit, to this shop that I espied a copy of a book dealers catalogue which I was allowed to purchase, something of a minor miracle, This I believe was Delectus Catalogue Number 5, put out by Michael Goss, The good fortune of locating this slim volume and my subsequent contact with the author, would ultimately lead to my going from a handful of titles gathered in provincial England, to becoming an international book  runner with a much broader remit to hunt out clandestine publications in many languages across over a hundred years of history, and also to be where I am today with my collection.

In-between are the  book hunting expeditions, all over the UK, and Europe, which will,  I hope entertain you in my future blogs.
