Another Maurice D’Apinac title, this one with illustrations by Topfer, a.k.a Gaston Smit, this copy is a first edition, rebound in quarter leather with author and title in gilt on the spine. The original covers are bound in. Along with the hors-texte there are numerous head and tail pieces and cul-de-lamps which makes the job of decorating the page somewhat easier. Early flagellation novels are scarce in English, the majority of this type of material produced tended to be of a pseudo scientific nature. Even scarcer are those with illustrations. There was some difficult in scanning these images, as the books are very small and bound together in one volume, so my apologies for any defects. I hope you enjoy them.

Another major player in the 1930’s flagellation market, along with Orties Blanches, were Les Editions Couvre-Feu, followed by Le Jardin d’Eros, distinctly different in that the contents and illustrations were more twisted and aimed at torture and humiliation, unlike the titles issued by Editions Prima, which always seem to have smiling faces , no matter what act of depravity is taking place, the characters in these editions seem to be taking it a bit more seriously.

A rare fragile and altogether beautiful item, in original covers with exquisite illustrations by Wighead. I have done my best with the photographs, and my apologies for any deficiencies, it was impossible to scan the book, because the stress would have broken it.

This title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.

This title has a peculiarity in that it appears to have a possible second state pasted on cover illustration, it covers the original illustration, which shows the bare breasted dominatrix, and may have been placed there by the publisher. The new cover illustration is pasted on at the 4 corners, but the original is clearly visible and intact underneath. Both illustrations are very nice so I have provided an alternative of the original for your information.

DOLLY MORTON

The author has been falsely attributed to Hugues Rebell [Georges Grassal]. It has been suggested that the author is Hector France [Mendes: 160-A]. Dolly Morton appears to have been first published in English by Charles Carrington in 1899. A French adaptation was also published by Carrington in 1901 as “En Virginie”. See also a 1904 edition published by Carrington with engravings by G. Dola.

There appears to be some confusion regarding the publication date, I have 2 sources 1.Eroticabibliophile Malteste checklist. and also Pat Kearneys Scissors and Paste. Orties Blanches PDF. Which give 1917 as the date for this edition, whereas Bibliocuriosa gives 1927 for the publication date of both this Dolly Morton and The Memoirs of Dolly Morton:-Bibliocuriosa Orties Blanches

I cannot see Both being published in the same year and I suspect a ten year gap may well be correct.

A very curious volume, two titles bound in one, but originally I believe separate books, this is supported by the fact that both are printed on good quality watermarked paper, but with different watermarks, for “Spanked in Bed”the paper is watermarked ” Mopaco Text” and for “The Whippers” the watermark is “COVENTRY BOOK”. I cannot locate another copy of “Spanked in Bed” and the 1925 publication date comes from the dealer I purchased it from. There is another current listing for “The Whippers” which dates it as 1911, but makes no reference to illustrations, the ones in my copy could of course be a later addition, as they are on plain paper with no watermark. However given the the style of the illustrations the 1920’s appear to be the right period. Oh, the joy of clandestine erotica, this one is unusual in that it appears to have cover even if nicely executed , which appears to be a home made creation, the quality of the paper and print, contradicts this, and the illustrations are a bit of a hotch-potch. Both volumes are contained in a Leather binding with original front and back cover preserved, the back cover carries a small label with the legend SELECT EDITIONS CO, 41 Union Square W New. York. I suspect that this may have been a retailer rather than the publisher , but I could be wrong.

A very nice copy of a rare edition, it shares some similarities to the Gargoyle press edition but is of much better quality than that edition as well as an enormous improvement over the two other titles linked below.

In somewhat better condition than my previous title, but ,still fragile however, a much better production than that of “Modern Slaves”, this title was also reissued under the Delectus Books imprint in 1995, and copies of that are readily available. This title also has a credited artist in Francis Heuber, and the claim to eighteen illustrations given on the title page only tallies if you include the decorative head and tail piece illustrations. So with ten full page illustrations and eight decorative illustrations here for your enjoyment is the original of Painful Pleasures.

The boards of this copy are battered and the spine is taped, still retains the cover logo.

To say this book is fragile is something of an understatement, the boards are becoming detached but the contents are OK, fortunately this title was reissued under the Delectus Books imprint in 1995, and copies of that are readily available. Originals are harder to come by, but make for an interesting comparison against their French counterparts. Curiously the whole genre of flagellation novels is generally accepted under the heading Le Vice Anglais, strange then that so few appear to have been produced in English and so many in French, where nearly all the protagonists have English names and titles.

This is an unusually late edition for me, undated, but close to 1980, judging by other titles issued by this press. This title and its illustrations are exceedingly rare, in the original French edition, published in 1934 by Éditions du Couvre-Feu. As well as the present edition which I have only ever seen the copy listed here.

Listed here for your enjoyment with the cover illustration in colour and 5 full page illustrations in monochrome, all by the incomparable Wighead. The author Jim Galding remains unidentified.
