Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists, this by the wonderful Louis Malteste. Who in this instance appears to have been the author as well as the illustrator.

Something of a lesson in this title which was an e-bay purchase, advertised as having the 21 illustrations called for, but in actuality only having 16 which are displayed here, it is always best when buying any illustrated book especially on eBay and from France to confirm that all the illustrations are present.

Another title from Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies, who certainly seemed to gravitate towards cheaper production than either Orties Blanches or Editions Prima, also their choice of artist is also sometimes suspect, as in this example the oddly named Bal-Tit, whose only credited work I can find is this title, he does appear to have something of a difficulty with the perspective in some of his illustrations.But regardless here for your enjoyment the cover and 10 illustrations.

This one is an interesting item only in the sense that it is very commonplace, a small volume printed on very cheap paper, but interesting because of the huge amount of work that went into it. The illustrations appear to be signed O. Canteau, and I can find no reference to this artist. The book contains 5 full page illustrations on glossy paper, 2 full page on plain paper and numerous head and tail decorations and vignettes.In no way a valuable book but fun to explore and enlarge the detail for your viewing pleasure.

Maison de Couture.

Maurice D’Apinac: Maison de Couture, ou le fouet en province; Libraries Artistique et Parisienne Reunies: 1932. Pages 257. Colour cover and 10 B&W illustrations.

Bécourt 42 : Convicted by the Criminal Court of the Seine 17th chamber on 25 November 1953 and then by the Paris Court of Appeal 10th chamber on 9 June 1954. The entry mistakenly indicates Max des Vignons as the author’s name.

Note, the head and tail-piece decorations and those between the illustrations are not from this book.

Another late clandestine publication of a title originally published clandestinely in 1786, this undated copy is a Losfeld publication from 1950, curiously there is also a contemporary, openly published edition , Editions de la Plume (1953), which only really differs by its cover and a far more elaborate Title Page, it has the same illustrations , (in red) but fewer of them only 8 to the 12 in this edition, and otherwise is identical in size and number of pages. Showing here all of the 12 illustrations.

Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists, the title on offer here was by a lesser artist who for me falls into the category “amateur”.

As with other imprints many of these titles were reprinted in the 1970 and 1980’s. Also curious to note was that this particular title was prosecuted in 1951, and subsequently lost appeals against the decision in 1953 and 1954. Given that the reprint did not appear until 1975, I am curious as to how it came to court in the 1950’s, some 20 years after the original publication, is there I wonder another reissue in the 1950’s not recorded?.

Diana Gantée

This press in its various incarnations was a prolific producer of flagellation novels, between the wars, many of them illustrated by Carlo, a large number of these titles were reissued by Editions Dominic Leroy in the 1980’s. Original editions are increasingly hard to find, and this title is a a nice example of a scarce original complete with a Frontispiece and 16 illustrations.

René-Michel Desergy. Probable, French author who sometimes used the pseudonym Désiré Van Rowel.

CARLO:French artist whose real name is unknown. Carlo has possibly worked as a cartoonist and illustrator to the review “Humor” under the pseudonym Charléno (Charles Hénaut?). “Exhibited at the Salon from 1912 to 1914

Previously only listed only in brief, but here for your enjoyment with all the illustrations, superbly executed, by Herric:- (Chéri Hérouard)

Chéri Hérouard (1881-1961) was a French artist and illustrator of numerous erotica and spanking novels. He used the pseudonym Herric when he illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches. And as evidenced by these titles also, Editions Prima.

Yet another accidental off shoot of my collecting activity, I found one of these titles and then set out to locate others, they are rather beautiful things and despite the subject matter, which even some erotic bibliophiles disapprove of, most were not prosecuted at time of publication and only really became the subject of censorship when reprinted , mainly in the 1950’s
