This book

Having listed this title before, and having mentioned that it is the most common of all the Editions Prima flagellation titles, it pleases me to add another copy, but this time with the frontispiece, which I have never seen before in any copy I have had (4), or in any other copy I have seen for sale, something of a find, and all the more interesting because the illustration is not repeated in the hors-texte contained in the book.

La volupté du Fouet:  Armand du Loup :- Éditions Prima : Paris 1938, Frontispiece plus 12 (sepia tone engraved plates)  illustrations hors-texte de R. Fanny. ( Etienne Le Rallic-1891/1968). Bookcase Archive : Matée par le Fouet: Jean Martinet, . Cover and 12 , superb engraved plates by Herric .Éditions Prima, {1930 }

Previously listed in a rebound copy, listed again here for completeness sake with  the original covers displayed. With all the illustrations, superbly executed (no pun), by Herric:- (Chéri Hérouard)

 Chéri Hérouard (1881-1961) was a French artist and illustrator of numerous erotica and spanking novels. He used the pseudonym Herric when he illustrated spanking novels for various French publishing houses, such as Jean Fort’s Collection des Orties Blanches. And as evidenced by these titles also, Editions Prima.

Yet another accidental off shoot of my collecting activity, I found one of these titles and then set out to locate others, they are rather beautiful things and despite the subject matter, which even some erotic  bibliophiles disapprove of, most were not prosecuted at time of publication and only really became the subject of censorship when reprinted , mainly in the 1950’s

I originally listed this in February 2016, but have just discovered that the link is orphaned, no idea where its gone, but fortunately had all the images, so here it is again, and a welcome addition to my list of Editions Prima titles, this one is the most common of all the Prima flagellation titles, but it is a lovely book.

Every now and then a book comes along that has everything right about it, this is one such book. Not necessarily because of condition, but because the object itself is aesthetically pleasing, I have had  number of titles produced by Editions Prima, and have  been impressed by the quality of the books, both in structure and content. Despite this it is difficult obtain a  list of titles produced by the press. They appear to have been quite prolific, producing pulp novels in their Editions Gauloise series and  other esoteric titles.I have not been able to locate a definitive list of the flagellation novels.

Matters are made more complex by the list of titles by this author in the front of this volume, none of which are Editions Prima titles. They are all either Amateur-Biblio or Librairie Générale titles, this is possibly explained by this title apparently being a reissue of the same title produced in 1930 by Librairie Générale , I have not had site of that edition, but from the limited material  available on line it looks to be of a much poorer quality than this edition. If this copy is a piracy it is a very expensive one. If anyone can explain this anomaly please complete a contact form.

I have decided to lay this one out in book form, so that the page decorations can be seen in situ, rather than just cropping out the illustrations, I have used only images in the book to construct this listing, it always make me happy when a book provides all of the content required to decorate a listing. Enjoy!

With the help of her butler and stable master, she took a liking to the domination and training of impressionable young girls, including her niece, whom she treated like a bitch.

LA BEUQUE, Jean de SMIT; Miss Cravache ou Les Vierges Esclaves, Editions Prima, 44 rue Servan, Paris (Xie), n.d. [circa 1932], illustrations by Topfer, Jean de la Beque and Ely Costes. Adorned with 12 inset heliogravures in sepia, on loose sheets including a frontispiece by Topfer [Gaston SMIT) and 4 inset illustrations, decorated caps and chapter ends by Jean de La Beuque and Ely Costes. . In-8 softcover, 14.3 x 22.7 cm. 223 pp. In excellent condition. Reissue, in all respects, of a novel published by the Librairie Générale in 1930. It was belatedly condemned in 1953 by the Seine court.

I must admit to having posted these illustrations before, primarily because I was interested in making comparisons between this artist, Marilac and Wighead. At the time I did not have a copy of this book and Christophe Bier was kind enough to send me a set of illustrations. Now I actually have a copy am listing the volume, This title for me represents one of the very best illustrated books in the genre, I still favour Wighead, who although remaining a mystery, provided significantly more material. Marilac despite notes elsewhere claiming him as unknown, is in fact Mario Laboccetta, a respected artist in the 20’s who appears to have had a very brief foray into the world of flagellation. The only other title I am aware of by him in this genre is the cover of another Editions Prima title, Gaston Vicennes, L’Amour Fouetté, which I have previously listed and which is also linked at the bottom of this page.
