Bookcase Archive: Professeur Alexander, Max, Satyres et Flagellants, Librairie Artistique et Édition Parisienne réunies, Paris, 1909. illustrations by G.Topfer.

Rather a good find this one and quite a surprise, though far from being an expert on flagellation novels, as evidenced by this blog a significant number of them have passed through my hands and been recorded on this site. I cannot ever remember seeing any depiction of pubic hair in any of these books and most definitely not a depiction of a vagina. This little volume has both. These images are of course commonplace in clandestine erotica, but not so in flagellation novels which were not illegal or subject to prosecution when originally published, although large  numbers were prosecuted in the 1950’s for unknown reasons.

I have difficulty finding other complete copies to reference, Bibliocuriosa (link at the base of this listing ) reference the illustrator of this edition as Leon Roze, but as they do not appear to have the illustrations they cannot have seen that they are clearly signed G.Topfer. I have previously had to apologise for difficulty in scanning images in rebound books and must do so again for this title, it is simply not possible to get the image flat to the scanner in a tightly bound book, but I have done my best.

Another rare flagellation title, I am not sure whether this title was reissued by Editions Dominique Leroy in the 1970’s, as were many of the other Carlo illustrated titles, but in any case it is worth noting that the illustrations in the original editions are on papier couche, or glossy paper, as a result they are much more vibrant than the reprints where the illustrations were on ordinairy cheap paper stock. This is the original edition and I hope you like the images.

Another German language title, which is a rare enough occurence on this blog, apparently first published around 1900, this appears in various editions, but I cannot locate another matching this copy, there is a listing for a 1932 edition Pivately Printed Budapest,  on-line, with claims to being profusely illustrated, without saying how many illustrations or by whom. The illustrations in this copy are small and pasted in on card, one of them is very familiar, having featured in Kearneys, History of Erotic Literature. I have done my best to present the illustrations as clearly as possible, I hope you enjoy them.

Book has been rebound in anonymous grey card covers, the original covers are absent, binding is loose and separating and the poor old thing needs resoration and a rebind. However for our purposes it is more than good enough because the illustrations are all present.

Another little gem, a clandestine title from the 1930’s a French edition of My Secret Life , originally published in English probably by Brancart in 1890, the first French edition appeared in 1923 this was parts of volume one and two, of the English edition, published by Maurice Duflou, this was turned into three illustrated volumes for the current listing. The full version of the English text was finally translated into French by Mathias Pauvert, and published by Stock in 1994.

I am fairly confident that this is the first time The books, all of the Title Pages, illustrations and headings with text, and tailpieces have all been displayed in one go, not without controversial elements, I hope you enjoy them.

Yet another stunning example from the golden age of erotica, a clandestine title from Duflou, with input from Perceau. This presented scanning problems, as the book is rebound with original covers bound in, so it was not always possible to get the images flat on the scanner bed, unfortunately there is not much to be done about this.

The book is interesting on a number of counts, as yet again this is a Briffaut publication which appears to have variant editions in the same limitations, in this case my copy has colour illustrations, all other copies I have traced have the illustrations in black only, I had a similar experience with my Briffaut copy of L’Anti Justine.

The most interesting point for me however is the anonymous illustrator of this title, which I believe to be the mysterious “Wighead”, I would welcome any comments on this possibility.

And for those among you that have an interest in books rather than just images, this copy has some damp staining in the guttering, and I would welcome any information on the possibility of treating this.

HUGUES, Clovis: ODE A VENUS. ODE AU VAGIN. Poème inédit.Domrémy,

A l’Enseigne de la Pucelle, s.d. (vers 1933) [Paris, Maurice Duflou]

1 volume in-8 (22 x 16.5 cm), paperback, 69- (1) pages. 10 photo-gravures inset in colour. Cream cover printed in red and black with two initials for the letters Q and V. The cover modestly bears the title Ode to Venus while the title page clearly indicates Ode to Vagina. Rebound copy with original covers bound in.

This volume contains a note on the author signed Jean Tiretta, the facsimile of the last page of the manuscript signed Klau-Vizuq, the Ode to Vagina, a notice on the Ode to Piron Priory by Helpey (Louis Perceau) , Ode to Priapus and The Seven Beatitudes.

With regard to Clovis Hugues (1851-1907), Aristide Briand wrote: “There were in him Beranger, Camille Desmoulins and Tartarin of Tarascon”. In other words: communard, freemason, socialist, poet; it was all this in turn and at once. The Ode to the Vagina dates from 1906. One knows nothing about the illustrator of this beautiful edition out of the presses of Maurice Duflou. Having apparently wasted a significant amount of cash on a new scanner, which claimed to be a book scanner, I find myself using my 12 year old Canon Lide 110 yet again as it is much easier to use and causes less harm to the books than the new model.

Also having had a major clear out on eBay, I am sadly coming to the conclusion that eBay is not really a valid outlet for auctions, unless you want to give the books away, I did however make enough to buy the above mentioned scanner (bad decision) and this wonderfully rare title listed below.

The Select-Bibliothèque was one of several publishing houses specializing in fetish material that flourished in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century. Like the others, notably Jean Fort’s ‘Orties Blanches’ series and the ‘Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies’ of Paul Brenet, the books of the Select Bibliothèque were published openly. Occasionally a title would cross some mysterious line and be prosecuted, but in general, since there was no sex in the conventional sense, these publishers were left to their devices by the authorities.

Despite the openness of these books, the publisher of the Select Bibliothèque remains unknown, at least to this cataloguer. Paul Jérôme writes of Don Brennus Aléra as being “un (ou plusieurs) des pourvoyeurs de l’editeur parisien Massy…” (Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, Paris: Mercure de France, 1971, p. 484). In fact, Massy was where the earliest books in the series were published. The almost anagramitic similarity of the names of the authors of most of the books – Bernard Valonnes, Don Brennus Aléra, Roland Brevannes – suggests a single hand at work, and one that spanned in excess of 30 years. And it might not be unreasonable to think that the author was also the publisher.

The numbered titles in the series were in a small 8vo – closer to 16mo – format, and began publication in 1907. However, there were also a handful of earlier titles, in a larger octavo format and on better paper, which were not numbered. I’ve only seen one of these [in a private collection in Hamburg]. These were also published circa 1907. It is probable that the unnumbered titles, being on better paper, proved to be uneconomical prompting the publisher to change to a smaller format and cheaper paper soon thereafter. Note also that only of a few of the Select Bibliothèque titles went into second printings, and so the Catalogues or ‘Tarifs’ which appeared in the front of each volume are usually incomplete, some titles being missing. I’ve only ever seen one title that the Select Bibliothèque itself reprinted, and that too was in Hamburg.

There were three different illustrators. The first of these was ‘Tack’, who was a better artist than his successors, but old fashioned. The others were ‘Esbey’ and ‘Selby’, who were rather naïve but who had better imaginations than ‘Tack’. It is Interesting that this series is so cohesive in concept and production, from 1907 through 1939 when it probably ceased.

. The details given are of the originals, I have no idea when the facsimiles were produced.
