Books for Trade: Xavier D’Estanges; Vice Secret chez les Femmes Éditions Georges Du Cayla s.d 1935

Listed  because the publisher sits within the group, of Les Editions du Couvre-Feu, et al, and this one actually fits within the flagellation theme, although I must admit to being completely mystified by some of the photographs, for instance the woman apparently purchasing lingerie?.

This copy is tightly rebound into a very nice binding and therefore there is an unavoidable curve on the leading edge of the images, there is no way that I can present these images flat, so my apologies for that, but I hope you enjoy them anyway. Unless something truly spectacular turns up this is likely to be my last photographic item, but I will continue listing my illustrated and non-illustrated books.

Yet again I am indebted to Christophe Bier and   ” Les Editions du Couvre-Feu”, editions Astarte, 2013, where the following bibliographic entry can be found at page 147.

Books for Trade: : X.L’Appel de la Chair. Les éditions idéales, 25 rue du Caire.Paris (2e) s.d (circa 1934)

This is a significant departure from my usual illustrated titles, being a photographic title, this has come about because of my recent interest in a book published by éditions Astarté in 2013, entitled “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, which is a wonderfully illustrated bibliography of that imprint and others associated with it. Along with magnificent works illustrated by “Wighead”, and titles by the master of the bizarre  “Jim Galding”, there are a range of fascinating titles mainly on the themes of flagellation and domination, and oddities like this title that are more peep-show than porn.

The brain behind the bibliographical content of “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, is Christophe Bier, who I also believe to be the originator of much of the material used to illustrate book.

The following description is taken from “Les éditions du Couvre-Feu”, where it can be found at page 149

Jean Fort was a prolific producer of erotica, under a variety of imprints, his Collection des Orties Blanches (White Nettles), was specifically dedicated to sado- masochistic story lines. Fort produced a very large number of titles under this imprint, between 1920-1939, illustrated by various artists.

This is the one of a short series of listings featuring” Orties Blanches”, titles from the 1930’s which is rapidly evolving into the period of the greatest interest for me, primarily because of the style and content of the illustrations across a wide range of competing publishing houses, and also of the artists themselves and the mystery surrounding the identity of particular individuals. This is the second, of only two titles , in this genre at least, that I can find illustrated by “Davanzo”, the other “L’Éducation de Chérubin”, published in the same series, was in a limited edition with engraved plates, the current title, is a much cheaper production, and actually pre-dates the  “Cherubin” by a month, being published on 30 Dec 1933.

Having nearly convinced myself the “Davanzo” and “Wighead”, are possibly one and the same person, I am not so sure, the 8 illustrations from this title, are very sketchy in comparison, to “L’Éducation de Chérubin”, but as stated above, this is a much cheaper production, on very poor quality paper. I still think you can see hints in some of the illustrations that display a similarity in style, and unless  someone can provide me with information, of a “Wighead”, illustrated title , in this  genre, that pre-dates December 1933, then , if not the same person,  “Wighead” may well have taken inspiration from “Davanzo”.

This original title is available for trade against my Paris Olympia Press wants.
