Notes: (1) In the Preface to a French-language paperback edition of this novel published about 1985 by Éditions Jai Lu, , Michel Gall recounts how it was Patrick Bowles, the translator of Samuel Beckett, who suggested that he [Gall] could earn some money by writing an erotic novel for The Olympia Press. The Sexual Life of Robinson Crusoe was written first in French, and a translation had to be arranged. Si mes souvenirs sont exacts,ŗ wrote Gall, cette tâche échut à un pasteur défroqué, originaire de Nouvelle-Zélande.ŗ The original French text was first published at Paris in May 1963 by Claude Tchou as part of his Cercle du livre precieux series, and reprinted shortly afterwards by Régine Deforges. A third, which ran into legal difficulties, appeared in the Marie Concorde collection in 1970, put out by Christian Bourgeois, and a fourth French edition appeared in 1977 from J.C. Simoën, at which time the author’s true name was given. (2) Suppressed on December 10th, 1956 under the decree of May 1939 (article 14 of the law of July 29th 1881 sur la liberté de la presseŗ), designed to combat politically and morally offensive périodiques et ouvrages de provenance étrangère. (3) Prosecuted on July 11th. 1958 under article 14 of a law passed on 16th July 1949 concerning the manner in which books, periodicals, &c. of an erotic character, could be sold, displayed and advertised.
